Some of you may already know this, but if you look on the bottom back flap of Hollywood and Vogue patterns, the date is stamped on the bottom. The last two numbers are the year. Check it out.

Here's how I discovered it:

Also, if anyone else has any info on those stamps on the patterns, please share. Hollywoods are my favourites. Thanks.

Very sharp to notice that -- I just recently finished Hollywood 1142 (Maureen O'Hara), and am about to start Hollywood 1244 (no star shown), and had never noticed the stampings. They're very faded on mine, but 1142 carries a 38 5 43 code, and 1244 is stamped 3 44. There may be some other numbers, but they're illegible -- the stamping on this one is very light and blurred.
The styles of these two patterns would be very consistent with '43-'44 dates, so that definitely makes sense as part of a code.

What would be interesting is to come up with multiple copies of the same patterns and compare the markings to see if they're consistent. One possibility for the first number might be that it indicates a production or packing line, or even an inspector's code.

Hollywoods have always been my favorite as well, that and mailorders. I'm really excited to find this out. I'll be checking my patterns tonight. Thanks!:eusa_clap

That would be interesting. All the ones I have with movies on them either coincide with the year the movie came out or it's one year later. The only exception was the Priscilla Lane pattern shown in my blog entry -- which cleary states it's a "Remake" :)

Ms. Lizzie Maine, do you think you might have a few minutes to let me pick your brain about the Hollywood 1142 pattern? I have a copy that I'll be making, but I realized that while I have all the pattern pieces, I don't have the instructions!

Sure -- I'm at work now, so my patterns aren't right at hand, but if you want to post your questions I'll dig out my copy as soon as I can find it and see what I can do. If it's the one I'm thinking it is, I've made several dresses off that pattern, so I'm pretty familiar with it.

Apologies on the delay - It seems I'm not getting email notifications. :)
The version of 1142 that I got came with all the pattern pieces miraculously intact, but with no instructions at all. I've pieced together most of it just by looking at it (while transferring the original tissue to a sturdier plotter paper), but some of them I'm a bit lost on because I only have the labels on the back of the envelope to go on.

Is the long "facing" is a facing for the edge of the sleeve?

And it's fairly obvious which skirt gores go together, but not which ones are front and back. It looks like (based on the notch mismatch on my copy) that the skirt gore pattern mirrors across center front and center back. Is that about right? I assume the shorter gore is the CF. :)

And hopefully last question - Does it open with a set in zipper under the left arm? The "material required" section lists a "9" slide fastener", but the "findings" on the upper flap mentions hooks and eyes and snaps too.

Thanks so much, and I'll try to remember to check on this in case I don't get email again.
