The reverse image thing is common but I have forgotten the reason why. The famous pic of Billy the Kid is printed in reverse.

Tintypes are a reverse image - or mirror image of the item photographed. Most people who keep such images save and label them both ways so as to preserve them as they were and as the subject actually was.

On this day of remembering those who labored before us I'm wearing my Thoroughbred 10X "Bowler" that I converted to what might have been a typical CSA Guerrilla's hat.

Since these holidays tend to bring on the melancholy as I remember those who came before me & the anniversary date did escaped me this summer, I decided to take a drive to a small cemetery where 6 men from Col. John C. Thornton's 3rd Virginia Cavalry lay buried near the skirmish at Bee Creek, July 13, 1864. Their graves went unmarked for yrs, today they lay in rest under the State Battle Flag.

Trying to catch the flag unfurled in the wind.

I'm going to list them by name in case one of their descendants should Google their name doing research:

PVT. Jasper Clemints
PVT. Robert McCormick
PVT. Jesse Myles
PVT. Andrew Smith

Of all the hats you've shared with us, this is my favorite. Considering the countless hats that were converted/modified/repurposed to suit the wearer's needs in those days, I think it's a perfect tribute to those who fought and sacrificed for their beliefs.

Thank you guys. I appreciate your comments & support very much. Having lost a family member in war it's a feeling that never goes away. Of the 20 or so killed that day at Bee Creek these 6 men were never claimed or returned home. I often think & hope that someone is out there looking for them now.

An unidentified Confederate soldier who could have been a guerrilla fighting from horseback.

Thanks guys! It was a late night so I'm a little slow getting started this morning.

A couple of pictures taken at some of the original reunions:

Original Reunion ribbons are pretty rare but they do turn up every once in a while.

An original pin missing the ribbon.

All brave men, may they never be forgotten.

On my maternal side I have a GGGrandfather who served on the Ironclad gunship, USS Benton. In researching the Benton & its battle record during the Civil War I found this unidentified pic of a sailor who served on the Benton. The USS Benton had a crew of 200 men living onboard. US Naval uniforms of the day displayed the name of their ship across the front of their cap. If you look closely you can see the name Benton (in reverse image) across his cap.

The USS Benton patrolled both the Mississippi River & the Yazoo River of Louisiana & Mississippi. It was involved in 31 battles during its commission including the Battle of Vicksburg where it was considered the flagship of the battle.
