Highwayman fit jacket pics -- looking for feedback.

Thinking of ordering a Highwayman, and got a fit jacket from the always helpful Carrie. I am 6' about 185, and this is a 40. I am not concerned about color or zips & pockets, as I will end up with a different configuration -- just with fit. Thanks!

(Strikes me that my wife was angling the camera downward a bit in some of the pics, which may distort slightly, but gives the general idea.)

Looks a bit too big and baggy all around to me. I know this is not supposed to be a slim fit style but considering how awesome this jacket looks on some members who nailed the size, I think you will only benefit by sizing down.

It's a 36, it's a boxy fit, so it'll never be a slim look, but dammit, it's cool.

The HWM seems to be particularly difficult for many to nail down in sizing; Craig is one of the few who has. The frontal pic with the jacket zipped isn't bad, with the exception of sleeves too long, but the pic from the back appears too big. I would rely on Carrie's input since she seems able to manage the situation based on two dimensional pics.

It's take a bit getting used to, I'm generally more a half-belt person, but I've always had a soft spot for the HWM and the hide is stunning.

Thanks guys. Yes, I agree that it seems big. But here's my issue: It's big around the torso in general, with a fair amount of extra, unneeded volume. But it has a feature that I've experience before with Aeros, that the front panel seems small compared to the rest of the jacket. So, when zipped it stretches tight across the chest, and I feel like I can't move my arms freely, even though there is plenty of room in the jacket. You can sort of see what I mean in the fourth picture down, with the jacket zipped and arms up (and it would be worse if I had zipped it up all the way). Not sure anything can be done about that, but I am afraid that with a 38 it would only be exacerbated, even if the rest of the jacket fit well.

I'm a half-belt person too, but that is as good as I've ever seen a HWM look. Is that the Premier model? I agree that the hide is stunning. That is cordovan?

To my eye the premier version of this jacket offers the best fit. It retains all the design elements but properly slims the jacket down proportionally. Unfortunately I can't remember the handle of the member who posted his premier here, witchlito maybe? His HWM was just about the best fit I've seen in this cut. Sloan's is great too but he seems to be thin enough to pull off the size down added length equation that doesn't always pay off so well with this cut.
Anywho, the OP's jacket is, as stated, a good size too large I think.

I'd try the Premier fit of the same size, or a few more hot dogs

A bit baggy overall, however if you plan to wear sweatshirts under it, it may work for you.

Here's mine, although do keep in mind its approximately 25 years old or so.
I am happy to be corrected by people who know much better than I, but I think the older jackets had a different sizing to the current ones. For instance, mine is tagged as a 42, but I have tried on a current size 40 previously with a very similar fit.

Threadstarter, you should take 1" off sleevelength and taper sleeves a bit from elbow down to cuff and you are good to go imho. Maybe 1" off body length. I own Aero Highwayman and three Simmons Bilt Roadsters (I kid you not) which is basicly the same jacket and all four of these fit at least as loose and wide as your fit jacket. It's supposed to be a loose style, nothing slim, nothing fancy, functionality over style. It's a "Highwayman" jacket, see?

edit; You wear only a shirt, too. If you want to layer under the jacket, don't size down. It will get restricting in the shoulder and shoulder blade area when reaching forward and zipping it up.

My own view is that this pattern doesn't work as often as it should. HD is the about only guy under 200 pounds on whom it looks great. I think the OP's jacket is too big but it's also a kind of 1980's fit which is a look some dig. I've seen this patten fit well so rarely that I have never had the courage to get one.

@tropicalbob this is an on-the-nail 36, and fits remarkably well, though I still have the straps tightened half-way. @Grayland, it's a standard fit model I picked up some months back, but I just stuck it away over the summer - it's got a beautiful soft black alpacca lining and it's made from substantial FQHH, so far too warm for the weather.
It needs a good bit of breaking-in yet, but I'm hoping that it'll drape like HD's once I've given it a bit of wear, but I couldn't resist the cordovan hide.
To the OP, if you're sticking with the HWM, I would seriously consider either sizing down or going for the Premier model. Otherwise, I would look at another, slimmer design. I don't think any amount of tapering, sleeve-shortening is going to make that particular size fit you. The HWM may be a boxy style, but you shouldn't look as if you're wearing somebody else's jacket (which you sort of are).

I'd agree with the general consensus here, the jacket looks too big. Length of the body is ok, but the shoulders, torso and sleeves looks one size too large at least. And the sleeves would look better with an inch less.
