I've been hanging around here as a guest for awhile and I've finally decided to register. Since being a member to the Fedora Lounge seems to have an unspoken rule of owning a fedora ;), I do have an Indy fedora from Lee Keppler. However, I want a hat like the one Josh Bernstein wears on Digging For the Truth, except without the $700 price tag. I've already talked to Steve Delk, and it'll take 3-4 months to get the correct color in for him to make it. Does anybody else have any contacts that I could use to get a Berstein close-enough?

Thanks,
-Kodiak :fedora:

It's been verified 100% that it is custom: from either Baron Hats of Nathaniels of Colorado. Thanks for the links though.

Kodiak, maybe Art Fawcett has that color. You can find him either here on the Lounge, or at http://www.vintagesilhouettes.com. He has made custom hats for me in the past and a 100% beaver hat will set you back less that $300.

Yes, we just had a thread about Josh Bernstein's hat...

The current person who sells that hat is Nathaniel's of Colorado...

and I"m pretty sure the color of Josh's hat is either bone or sahara...KC

My sand-colored Akubra Flinders is almost a dead match color-wise. That doesn't help you much style-wise, I realize, but at least you know what color to look for if you go for an Akubra. The Jackaroo seems to have a pretty similar crown height and bash, though the latter is obviously easy to remedy. The Jackaroo does have a bound brim, too, where Josh's is raw.

My braided band is significantly thicker than Josh's, too. I haven't seen any Akubras with that thin a band. Again, easy to fix, though.

My favorite too.

That's my favorite hat too! I have never seen Josh whatever-his-name-is's show, but spotted the hat on Nathaniel's website. To make a long story short, I was traveling out west and wanted to stop by Nathaniel's for a fitting. Since I was going MILES out of my way, I wanted to know their hours of operation. They waffled and did not want to give me a firm time when they'd open & close. That was very disappointing, since it took me over 40 years to scrape up enough money and time to go out to that part of the country.... it's not like around the corner for me. :( Anyhow, I figure their business must be really good to discourage an inquiring customer like me... so I decided that I will have that hat built by someone else. I've been thinking about having one of the Fedora Lounge guys do it, as someone suggested Art. I will be VERY interested in what you end up doing. Please keep us informed!

Art Fawcett hatter

I spoke to Art and he can build that hat out of beaver or rabbitt fur felt. He is a nice guy and would never treat anyone badly... He told me $185.00 in rabbitt or $275.00 in pure beaver.

Yep, Art can do it for $185, Steve Delk can do it for $175 if he can get the right felt in.

Personally, I think I'm going to either go cheap for right now (I can get an Akubra Territory that looks very close with a reduced brim from Hatsdirect, the only con is that it has vent holes) or I'll just save my pennies until I can afford one of the custom ones.

Thanks for the info.

Thanks for asking for a price on that hat. Less than $200 *IS* a bargain! I'm saving my pennies now. ;)
