I don't beleive that fingernail polish works on actual silk stockings. Pantyhose yes...but silk stockings no.

stockings are pretty inexpensive these days so I've never felt the need to mend them either.
Fish net stockings: I'm so glad this was brought up! the mister bought me some pairs of them...now, whenever I see a woman wearing fish net stockings, it's usually on the corner of a street...he says, 'ooh no! they're classy!' so, are fish nets a 'hooker' type attire, or can you wear them and have class?

I don't see anything wrong with them at all. My mother wears them all the time. I even have some in nude that are just great with just about anything. Then again, I see women wearing them all the time, including some of the most put-together and corporate of ladies. I'm pretty sure they're entirely acceptable these days.

Besides, class is about you, not your clothes. If you're classy, you'll look classy in fishnets. If you're trashy, you'll look trashy in anything.

Mending stocking a dying art!

Up until the 1980's I can remember my sisters as teenagers sitting down and mending their sheer pantyhose (micro mesh sheer tights for us in the UK ) so as fashionable teenagers then it must have been acceptable thing to do to save money. You do not see it been done now in the UK , I think it is because of the price of hosiery has dropped in relative terms to other things and so it cheep to buy a new pair today .
Stocking today are so sheer and including lycra to add stretch and fit compared with say 20's and 30's cotton or silk stocking or even nylons, I do not know if it would be possible today to find a thread that stretches the same so with modern hosiery it might not be possible not even mention the economic of sitting down and doing it when you could spent the same time and pop out to the shop for a new pair. With 40's to 60, original nylons might be different with a lot less stretch ( am I right ladies with that as I do not have a pair myself ? )It might been possible as mending thread was on sale up to maybe the 80's, actually doing it is totally another matter . Certainly with 20's and 30 cotton/rayon mix it would have been possible and even with your best silk you could be very carefully and stitch or mend them.
Decodoll made a good point with the match box mending kits about the thickness of the thread, I have also in my collection a small chrome plated mending kit with several bobbing of thread and needle this is a travelling set from the 20's , the colour of the thread is tan . black and lighter skin tone so it's for hosiery in my view and the thread is also thick and I think it's silk .So I conclude that every early on mending stocking was commonly done in the 20's and 30's with cotton and silk and as time has passed done less so, a dying art maybe or gone completly now.

I guess the mister was right...he sees a lot more of the business community..and said the same thing, that classy ladies were wearing them with their suits...but he's also been known though to throw me a little white lie to get me to wear something he buys!

I *almost* got into "trouble" for wearing fishnets to work. My principal is a bit old fashioned and likes that I dress in what she calls "sensible, modest" attire but one day, I wore a pair of fishnet stockings with pencil skirt, wide cinch belt and fitted sweater, she called me to her office and told me she didn't think my stockings were entirely acceptable BUT, she added, "I see what you're trying to do here" (she actually said that) she then said "alright, I'm sorry, forget it." I think it so engraved in people's minds to see fishnets on "dancers" and women who are known to solicit business outdoors so that's what people think of them. But like Betty Valentine says, it's what you bring to your outfit as a whole..., you know what I mean.

Maybe its just me....but I don't think I have ever seen anyone walk up randomly and hand a fishnet wearing girl a 20.......unless that girl was standing on the streetcorner and/or wearing a cigarette girl outfit with short ruffled underskirt.

Although maybe those men in Washington State are just much more forward then Los Angeles.

I have several pairs of modern nude double-net fishnets (hard to describe but the holes are very small and the "net" looks patterned/lacy), they look very conservative and provide excellent coverage (someimes vintage sheers seem to magnify every scratch and flaw on your leg!). I think DKNY makes them--they are great and last *forever*.
