Fed in a Fedora

Akubra Squatters can be shipped with open crown. You can then get this very close to the desired look for a lot less money. Gray is commonly available. I see black is listed on various European sites, but not sure if these are currently offered in the US.

Umm, can you be more specific in what you're looking for?

If you're not particular about the crown shape, another option would be something like a Stetson Austral, which is buffalo felt, which will be cheaper. But that's a flattop crown.

The Squatter's brim won't be as large, but it will have a similar look. Akubra doesn't have a model with a large, flat brim like that.

As Lean N Mean suggests, if you're on a budget, ebay is your best bet, but you'll have to do the legwork and have some patience. I don't know of any other "off the rack" hats that will be what you seem to be looking for.

Oh, that Fouquet guy again.....

Mr. Dean is correct, neither hats are fedoras proper. The first is very close to Stetson's "Boss Raw Edge," the second black hat is basically the hat I already linked you to (which JJ Hat Center is calling a Boss of the Plains, somewhat inaccurately). A hat with a brim that large is going to cost you extra, period.

The Stetson Stratoliner has a significantly shorter brim, but is technically a wide brim fedora:

The Stetson Old West collection has other buffalo hats aside from the aforementioned Austral:

Akubra Bushman, 3 1/4" brim:

If you want really budget, there's probably a wool western out there, but that's beyond my frame of reference.

edit: here are some more that are similar, but not quite a 4" brim:

I suppose the best description of the type of hat you're looking for is a 'Gothic fedora' .....4" brim & a high crown ( at least 5") with a wide ribbon. If you don't have the funds to buy new or have one made by a reputable maker, then stalking the bay seems a logical solution, look for a vintage cowboy hat ( the advantage of such hats, apart from the price & dimensions, is that they have stiff brims ) your size & prefered colour & then steam it into the shape you want ( it's a lot easier than you might imagine) & to finish, put on a pretty ribbon 'n' bow. Job done.

We could recommend hats until the cows came home but it's doubtful they would either be of the dimensions you're looking for, nor the right price.

What you do is hit the Kijiji or Craigslist or whatever the local buy and sell is. Do a search for cowboy hats, you should come up with some (you live in Ohio after all) Look for an older one your size and with a smaller brim about 3” to 3 ½”. Hold out for fir felt or at least 6X’s that usually means it is at least rabbit fur. If you don’t see anything the first search just give it time, they do surface. It will most likely come looking like this.

Brush the dirt/dust off the hat. Soak the outside of the hat in running cold water and pop the crown out and flatten the brim. Make sure to not get the sweat band wet. It will shrink. Leave it to dry.

If you do not weigh down the brim the edge will usually curl naturally on their own. Dry bash the crown to get it the way you want it. I chose a diamond crown. Once you have it the way you want it hit it with a little more water to keep it in that shape.

To get the pencil curl all I would do is play with the hat rolling the edge with my fingers.

Hope that helps.
