So I was watching the movie "Illusionist" this weekend and Admiring the hat worn by the character " Inspector UHL"

Remembering I am new to hats so my first guess was possibly a Homburg but it looked a bit too big for one ... Then I thought maybe a fedora but with a rolled brim...... Dunno.....

So first here are some pics from the movie that i found.. None give a really good look at the hat but you will get the idea... and last I found a hat that sort of looks like it....

I wouldn't mind having one of these but since no hat stores available in my area I will have to order and don't even know what to ask for.... See what you...

Now see if this is similiar in your opinions.. Minus the feathers and with the brim turned down a bit....

I would classify it as a Homburg, yet with a brim on the wider side of the range you might see. Hard to say exactly what was used as a movie prop (vintage or modern made) but your equivalent in the last photo looks like a perfect match to me. Some of the modern ones available in stiffened wool have that large brim and yes, with steam and coaxing it can be made to swoop down in front. However, due to the overall stiffness of the hat and the edge binding, they do not seem to want to stay in that swoop all that well. It helps if your head is Long Oval and if you can get the hat to conform to that more elliptical shape because the brim will want to stay swooped down a lot more that way.

Has anyone noticed Eisenheims Bowler he wears at the end of the movie, when he's in disquise. I love this hat, i've been trying to find a photo of it. If anyone has found a photo let me know. Or else i'm going to have to pause the movie and save the still shot. Its a beautifu hat. Was watching this movie last night, and noticed his hat really quick and went WOW, id love a custom made bowler like that.

It's a pretty typical circa-1900 homburg - a time when, along with the bowler, it was the standard pre-fedora everyday dress hat. There were lots of variations in crown and brim size, angle of brim curve, and colors at the time.

Besides looking at today's standard models, check out hatters who do more historical styles - for example:

I LOVE that movie, BTW!

I've seen the film multiple times, in the theater and on DVD - it's definitely a bound edge. It's pretty much a classic homburg... but an earlier, little more flamboyant version.
