Hi guys,
I hope I’m using this site correctly. My first time here, and my first time owning a leather jacket, so please go easy on me! Feeling a little out of my depth but excited to learn more.

Here is the scoop: I picked up this jacket at a yard sale a few days ago, and I'd love to know more about it. Pictures of the tag included, though it's both worn and torn.

The owner saw me looking and told me I could have it for 10 bucks since the sale was almost over. I thought that was a great deal for what seems like real leather, but it does have some issues. The zipper is coming apart at the bottom, one of the pocket liners is kind of shot, and there are many loose threads in the jacket lining. I'm willing to put a little money into fixing it up - does anyone have any suggestions on (1) who to take it to and (2) what to ask for? Does the leather itself need attention, or does it seem in ok shape?

Finally, the jacket seems pretty clean overall, but realistically... it was hanging on the side of the road. There's some dirt and verdigris and stuff. If anyone has any advice on the sanitary side of things, i.e. how to make sure it's clean without making it look new, it would also be greatly appreciated.

There are a few leather shops in the US suitable to have a new zipper installed without making a mess of the stitch work, Johnson Leathers, SF and the talented Denna for starters.. other than that, I would swipe off the leather with a damp cloth and then give it a treatment of Pecards or Lexol.. that's maintenance you should see to every 1-2 years on a frequently worn jacket. Wouldn't do anything else, jacket looks good.

Thet's a heck of a great find for a $10 Yard sale jacket. They are sought after.

I'd encourage you to carefully hand-wash that jacket, then let it hang-dry for a day or two with only a fan blowing on it (no heat). There are threads on here about doing this. Do not add any conditioner until it's ~ 95% dry, then try something like Urad Tenderly or Horseman's One-Step. Both are great for re-hydrating the leather. I would do all this first before trying to see about the zipper, but yeah, Dena at Great Leather is excellent.
