Help dating vintage Lewis Leathers Phantom No. 443 — Opti zips, size 40, blue lining

Hi everyone,


I recently picked up what I believe to be a vintage Lewis Leathers Phantom No. 443 and would love help pinning down the Model and production date more precisely.


What I can see:

• Model appears to be the Phantom No. 443 based on the symmetrical front zip and overall silhouette (not Super Phantom) - But I could be wrong.
• Opti plastic zippers throughout - not metal ones
• Blue lining intact and in good condition
• Zipped two-way dual slider main zip - could not find any similar Lewis models to it online.
• Cloth care label with "Genuine Leather" in red block letters and the classic Lewis Leathers typography — no washing symbols present

My best guess:

Based on the Opti zippers, cloth label style, absence of washing/care symbols, and blue lining, I'm estimating early-to-mid 1960s — possibly 1962–1967. The Opti hardware specifically feels like an earlier production indicator to me, but I could be wrong.


My questions:

1. Does the Opti zip confirm or narrow the date range at all?
2. Does the cloth label style help pin the year more precisely?
3. Am I correct on the Phantom No. 443 identification, or could this be another model?
4. Any other details I should photograph to help with dating?

Photos attached — label close-up, oval wing badge, Opti zip pull, and double buckle hardware.

Any help greatly appreciated. This community seems to be the best resource for this kind of identification, and I'd rather get it right than guess. I like this jacket a lot and would love to understand more about it.

Following up on my original post with some new findings that I think nail down the dating pretty precisely.


Model confirmed: Super Phantom 443


I initially thought this might be the standard Phantom 437, but closer inspection revealed a sleeve pocket on the left arm — which according to the original 1976 Lewis Leathers catalogue confirms this is definitively the Super Phantom 443. The catalogue describes it as "the same high quality and trim styling as No. 437 but approximately 27" long, fitted with extra sleeve pocket."


Label dating confirmed


I found a Lewis Leathers label dating guide which shows label evolution across decades. My jacket has the white "Lewis Leathers" label with "GENUINE LEATHER" in red block letters, distributed by Lewis Leathers — which the guide dates precisely to Early-to-Mid 1980s.


Hardware now makes sense
This explains the zipper combination that puzzled me earlier:

• Zipp two-way dual slider main zip
• Opti plastic pocket zips

Lightning Fasteners closed in 1980 and Clix with it — so by the early 1980s Lewis Leathers would have moved to alternative suppliers like Zipp and Opti. The hardware is fully consistent with the Early-to-Mid 1980s label dating.

Remaining questions

1. Does the blue lining help narrow within the 1980–1984 window?
2. Does the Zipp two-way main zip appear on confirmed early 1980s examples — or does it suggest London production specifically?
3. Any other details visible in my photos that could help pin this further?
