I'd like to introduce myself here. My name is Janine and have always had an interest in the olden days..I'm only really starting to get the 1940's look.
So, I've done loads of internet surfing (how, uh, something from the past haha) and came across this forum--I'll tell you what, I am so inspired to see that there are others out there like me, and it's even more inspiring to see that you're all (or the majority) dressing like our grandparents did!
So here's a question: what reactions did you get from people when you started going vintage/vintage inspired?

Oh my goodness! I've been here in Australia for over 4 years, and honestly still don't exactly know where to look for the vintage shops. I've seen maybe one or two a few years ago, but then I forgot where they were!
Wow, I really have to get in touch with us Perth-dwellers to see where everything is!

Hey Janine,

We used to have way more vintage clothes stores in Perth but sadly, Mums and Petticoat Juction are gone as well as one that used to be in Wembley Arcade and one on William Street. I bought sooo much of my stuff there in the past.

I have been swing dancing for 11 years and Perth has a big scene. Lot's of people used to dress up all the time but I'm one of the few who still does - but swing dancing does tend to attract a lot of like-minded people. I have a lot of 30s and 40s vintage but I tend to stick with 30s more these days an make have a lot of repro stuff made form old patterns because it's easier to clean and look after. Most of what I wear to work every day has a 30s look and when i go out. To me, it's just classic style that I love. It doesn't have to be original vintage - I'm not that full on. Lots of repro stuff is awesome.

The hair is another thing, takes time and practice and I can't do it all the time. if I did, I'd be in curlers every single night!

What reactions do I get? Mainly just that I look really stylish and people love my clothes. When I'm in full vintage with hair etc, you get stares but I don't care. But I've been doing it for nearly 12 years so I don't really care what people say. Half the stores are full of 30s styled ladies clothes atm. I can wear a totally new outfit (satin puffed sleeved shirts, vests, tweed longline bias skirts to the knee and look the part as long as I do my hair vintage. I even have modern shoes that are 30s style. It's how you put it all together that counts.

I went to LA recently for a FL event and didn't want to come back because I felt so at home there with everyone dressed up like me.

Oh, and big Antique Fairs are always good for finding cool vintage stuff and occasionally clothes. I've found lots of cool hats, celluloid and bakelite jewellery and old magazines at fairs. Used to be HUGE one at the Fremantle Passenger Terminal once a year...Binkie would know that one. But I don't know if that's on anymore.
