Hats in Jackson Mississippi?

I don't want to get into a huge discussion about Adventurebilt (especially since JoshD has already said they're out of his price range), but supposedly the people who've ordered lately have had pretty short wait times - BruceWayne ordered sometime in September and had it by the end of October. -M

Someone else on COW posted about a receiving a recent order yesterday as well.

Well. Of all my exstensive web searching and enquiries here, I think my best bet would be to try some of the department stores, BassPro Shop, or some of the western wear stores that are around.

If New Orleans is not too far, you might try Meyer the Hatter. They have a huge inventory and you can try on a lot of different factory manufactured hats which are way cheaper than custom. Custom-made hats are way better than factory-made, so you should go with custom if you can afford it.

I was just going to toss that in. During Hurricane Isaac, I evacuated to Jackson, and it was a fairly short drive each way. Meyer's will have a lot of choices for you to try on, including the Stetson Temple in mink, and I think they also carry the Akubra Squatter -- though that might be a bit big in the brim for your taste. However, you don't know until you try.

(Be aware that if you go down on a Saturday, you'll probably have to park in a garage, or put money in a parking meter. The so-called geniuses who pretend to run this city have decided to have parking meters active on Saturday. They seem to think it'll bring more business downtown. Ha.)

I never really put the hat through its paces, I only kept it for a year or so, deciding that vintage hats provided me with much better quality at muhc lower prices. Since I'm a size 7, I've gotten some ridiculous deals that just make new hats not a good value for me. I haven't paid more than $100 for any of my vintage lids, and that includes a Stetson 100 with the original case.

But I digress, on the Temple, mine had a bit of powder dye that came off with some sweaty hands, but I brushed it off and gave it a good water repellent treatment. And while it held up quite well to the heat and humidity of Southern China, Hong Kong, and Taipei, it never really got rained on.

Off topic...but welcome to the Lounge! I am near the Jackson area as well! It's harder for me to find more of the vintage "wants" in such a rural area but good luck with your hat purchase! The Lounge has many members who are very helpful.

Nope, I no longer have the Mink Temple -- I think I sold it in Denver to help finance my move back down here. (Two actions I regret bitterly.) JLee's pics show it well, though I recall mine was a darker brown than his first two shots make it appear, more like his "action" shot. My Nougat one looks a lot like his third shot, however.

I have had a Caribou (gray) Stetson Temple for well over a decade, and the color has never run in rain or snow. But it has gotten somewhat out of shape and could stand a reblock.

It's a good hat, but the Akubra Federation is much better choice for an Indy-ish hat. It costs less, is better made (tougher felt, nicer sweatband), and will stand up to weather and use far better than a modern Stetson. I've got a decade-old Federation III too, and as opposed to the Temple, it's still in like-new condition after a similar amount of wear and exposure to the elements.

Good to know Doc Strange as I have the same Stetson. Though I dont get it out in snow much (LOL) and rain but I expect that from time to time I would need it refreshed. I am tempted to get a hat done up with a less wide ribbon and maybe complimentary grey rather than the black ribbon on the Saxon, but I get some many compliments. Most times I think it is the fact that I am wearing a dress hat, rather than it is the SAXON model

From what I understand, beaver is what you want in a hat that will deal with bad weather. Akubras are rabbit-plus-hare felt, I think, and are tough enough for most conditions. I've never worn my Temples in heavy rain, so I can't say there, though I believe the Mist Gray one handled quite a bit of snow in Denver without any trouble.

Remember, however, I bought my Temples back in the '90s. It's possible current ones aren't as strong.

I was strictly referring to the mink felt?Unless Temples are all made this way which I didn't think they were but I've been known to be wrong on many occasions
