Probably meant to be a customized Boss of the Plains by Stetson. The open crown isn't really low until you put a crease in it and the wide brim gives the illusion that the crown is lower than it is. That hat was designed in 1865 by John B. Stetson for the demands of the American west. The felt is beaver fur felt.

Just looking at a few pictures of the hats, I'm thinking it was more of a stylistic choice of the costume designer than an attempt at a completely historically accurate hat.

If this is the hat you're referencing, that's not a boss of the plains, modified or no. Crown and brim are all wrong for that.

I would call it a variation of a slouch hat, with a fedora crease. Slouch hats were common in the Civil War era,
and took on all types of creases including open crown. I think most wouldh ave had a center dent type crease, but I could be wrong.

Looks to me that the TV show hats are way, way wrong for a eastern/near southern post civil war era hat. Brims are way to big. Look at that original photo and brims look 2-1/2 or less even. Those TV hats are at least 4 inch brims. Bad. They all look like cowboys, not late 1800s eastern/southerners.
