I don't know about Canada, but there is Henry the Hatter in Detroit, if I remember right, as well as custom hat makers in Buffalo and Rochester. Guelph apparently had a Biltmore hat factory, but it's closed, I read, and anyway they weren't a hat store. But there must be something in Toronto.

Good Hat Stores In America

I love the Fedora Lounge, because I love hats, and in the universe of the web as far as hats - this is the Sun. But I have to say: there is a lot of "Full Retail" talk on this forum in general and how it is always a 'bad thing' and basically to 'beware'. I think I have no choice but to be the spokes person for de-railing this kind of silly talk because I don't think anyone has ever mentioned it or questioned it until now.
Folks, lets say that having Good Hat Stores around is a great thing, using The Hat Guys as an example because they were mentioned earlier on in the thread, I hear everyone saying its a great shop in the Bay Area and so many praising their store: they have a great selection, family owned business, full service. But, make sure you get something on the 'Sale Rack'?? A grand idea: pay 'Full Retail' and keep Good Shops in business. The mark up in hats isn't that grand so don't be mistaken. If your money is tight - Get a New Hustle! Let's not turn into the country that wants everything 'Good' but 'Real Cheap'.. I don't see how that is going to work out in the long run. Maybe if all those shops close then we can pretend that EBay is really a hat store... It makes my stomach turn, but then again; maybe it's because I own a hat store that stocks 9000 hats, has at least 3-5 people working at all times, and has a back room full of blocks, flanges, and equipment ready to make any hat the perfect fit and shape on the house. Oh, and I forgot we are 'Full Retail' and charge what the going rate for the hat is on the web. It can't be!
Come on Gentlemen: To 'overprice ones merchandise: there is no need for it - but to actually get the standard mark up - why not? To think only huge chain stores should make big mark ups is just plain silly - why shouldn't Legit Great Hat Stores. Being in this industry with both feet, hands and my head; I can say that I love this business it is great to be a Hatter and live it everyday, I wish I could say all hat stores were doing as dandy, so before you let that 'full retail' none sense keep you from your local hat store please think about it. Many of those legit shops are there for you. The hat wearer who is serious about hats. When you read the A-List keep that on your mind. I think back to hat stores that folded - Arnold's in NYC comes to mind first off - they didn't charge 'Full Retail' they charged less than every hat store in NYC. Quick go over and get a hat - nope, they went out of business. Must of been all those deals. Point made, and I am surprised no one has brought it up before.
Some of the greatest hat stores in the world are in this country - Let's keep them open folks by just paying what the hat And the service is worth and not scour for the cheapest price at any cost.

Jessen, I agree for the most part with what you say. I had a business of my own for a time and tried to lower my costs in the expectation that it would bring in more customers. Perhaps it did, but the simple reality is, it didn't bring enough customers in and I had to move on. Fair market value is not a bad thing, and some folks just don't understand how much overhead there is with operating a business. Man has to make a living, after all, and I would hate to see hat shops disappear.

Just price a full set of hat block and brim flange and then in all the sizes and styles of blocks then think of all the sewing machines and hat irons and block spinner and steamer and ribbon stock and ......... Most just don't realize the actual dollar value that is required to have a hat shop that does custom work and cleans and blocks hats.

Paris Hatters - San Antonio, TX

I apologize if they have already been mentioned, but I have always had great experiences with Paris Hatters. I have done business with them even before I moved to Texas and they've been around since 1917. The store has a good selection of western and non-western styles. I have bought several hats from them as well as having many more cleaned and restored. Check my postings and you will see a number of examples of my hats that have been literally brought back to life by them. Prices are average on retail, but very reasonable on cleaning and repairs - plus I have never waited more than two weeks on any hat they have worked on.

I'll second Paris Hatters--Abe and Rick take great care of my hats! Oh--and Dillinger used to get his suits pressed there when he was in San Antonio!

I'll third Paris Hatters. I've been buying hats from Abe for years. Rick also does great ribbon work. I think I remember Abe telling me that Rick comes from a family of tailors and that is where he learned to be so skillful with a needle and thread.

That shop has been there many years and has a lot of history to it. Also besides Dillinger, I think quite a few of the gangsters of that era used to shop there when they were in town. I can't remember the man's name but there was an old unscrupulous gunsmith in San Antonio that was known for making Colt 45's fully automatic and he apparently dealt a lot with the criminals of that era so quite a few came through San Antonio. The really interesting part of the story is this guy did gunsmith work for the local law enforcement officers too. So he was playing both sides of the fence. If I can find it I used to have an old article about him.

Update: I remembered the gunsmith's name. Here is a Wikipedia entry for him.
