Winchester currently can’t make dove gray, so that limits me. I do have a “blue smoke” light gray hat on the block with VS. Should be done this month!

I can tell you that this combination - dove gray with a self-ribbon - makes a lovely hat, if my VS version is any indication, and it is.

Ok, trying to decide myself: Camel or Sahara? Your experience?

In my experience, the hat I had that went with most things was an early-fifties style fedora in a light, silver-grey with a 2"-2.25" brim. Not my first choice in the abstract - that will always be a higher crown and wider brim - but somehow the slightly narrower brim was always easier to combine with casual (up to and including a leather jacket and slacks) than the wider brim. The same-colour ribbon on Silver Grey also meant it worked fairly well with earthtones as well a great with greys and blacks. To my eye, the look of a black band on a grey hat always made it clash with brown leather, whether in a jacket or brogues.

Going custom, I think you have to decide whether you want a special, custom hat for special occasions, or whether you want something as daily-wearable as possible. The latter certainly helps with justifying the cost of going custom, though myself when going custom anything I have a tendency to opt for some shape, colour, detail that I wouldn't be able to get off the rack to help justify the expense.

I have a couple of hats already in queue with Rick, but I’m thinking my next will be a Whippet clone in Silverbelly with an old copper ribbon.

This “camel” was made from a European hat body and its not exactly the same as the Winchester color. The Winchester Sahara is less orange. I wear the Sahara a lot more than the the WHAYWT thread shows.

I am having VS Custom Hats make me my first custom hat. As others have commented with their experiences, I am having a hard time deciding on a color. I want something more casual and have been thinking about a light brown color. I think I am having a hard time seeing the colors from the swatches. Camel is a light brown. What other VS colors would be considered light brown?

I have started looking at the granite color a lot. I have seen some very nice hats with it. I like the Sahara color, but I am thinking it might be too light of a color for my pale complexion. I also like Pecan and Whiskey, but they are more darker browns. I also think Natural would be a great color.

Even with the swatches it is hard as the finished hat always turns out lighter than the swatch. I just made a fedora in Sahara and it turned out what I would call a light Mushroom colour. The Natural is a few shades darker than that but I would still call it a light colour and it varies from batch to batch. I have two and one is at least one shade darker than the other. Pecan is what I would call a mid brown not a dark brown and it is a great neutral brown. The Whisky is closer to a dark brown but still what I would call a mid tone. Camel is a very yellow brown and in my view tough to match clothing. I have one and rarely wear it.
A warning on Granite. This one can vary. I have two, one has decided brown undertones the other has much more grey undertones. It is however a great neutral colour. Art used to have a proprietary colours he called Coyote and Limestone. Coyote is a mid tone brown. Limestone a darker Natural. Perhaps work it backwards....ask what will I be wearing this hat with? What are the predominant colours in my wardrobe....jacket, boots/shoes?

Thank you so much!! That is very helpful. I am leaning to the pecan and possibly the granite. I will ask about the granite. If I pick the granite, I would prefer the shade that has the brown undertones.

I have a custom natural, Sahara, and granite. I like them all because they are mid-tones and go with many different wardrobe color combinations. I tend to wear the lighter Sahara in the spring and fall. My biggest challenge is with pecan - not grey, not brown, it just does not match much of my personal clothing colors.
