Happy liberation of Paris days! August 19th thru the 25th. In short the allies initially wanted to go around Paris. But on the 19th a “popular uprising” against the Nazis broke out. De Gaul demanded that the allies let him take an armored column into the city, lest Paris be liberated by the communists. The allies reluctantly agreed. Hitler ordered General von Choltitz to destroy the city, but the General did not carry out the order. The German garrison surrendered on the 25th.

The liberation of Paris brings to mind the story of Virginia Hall, an American who fought with the underground in Vichy France.

Her life was immortalized in the book: A Woman of No Importance.

I like strong women, and she is one of the strongest I have read about. [Try as I might, I am unable to rid myself of these cursed italics]

Yes, she is still alive. She is living on a street that is named in her honor. How many people can claim that?!

I just read that Simon Segouin passed away in Paris in February, 2023 at the age of 97.
