Hang your hat

[Bud-n-Texas]

There have been threads in the past how to store/hang ones hats. I am working on a project now, to be used in my office at home. The photo below is a current photo, I plan on adding a shelf on top to store/display my nicer hat box's.

The construction is of red cedar, with the hope of repelling any vermin that may show up.

These will be used as the shelf supports

I have 2 stingy Resistol's a stingy Mallory and a Homburg Courtney centerdent, A Royston Derby and the remainder are C-crowns, I think.

I saw your post about a diamond bash, I have a black fedora on the way, it may be a candidate for the diamond bash.

I prefer C-crowns over the centerdents on my fedoras also. Nice collection Bud! i'm trying to get a collection like that.

Nice bunch of hats and, in my opinion, a superior way
to decorate. I have heard opposing views, though.
The danger of putting out one's hats is that some people
do think you crazy for having so many...

Actually I was looking for input on the rack and seem to have clouded it with THE HATS. I have box's for all my hats and even went so far as putting cedar disk in each of them. Then after reading here the moth "culture" I decided that boxing them all the time may not be wise. I also do enjoy the ability to grab a different hat when on the run, or just to look at the design of the hats from time to time. Once again thank you for all the kind words. I would love to hear some ideas on finishing the rack.

I like those, behind those darn hats are door stops. They have a soft plastic/nylon/rubber tip so as not to damage the hat. It also helps keep the hat from sliding off.

Over time I am sure it could collect. I wear them on a regular basis and a brushing every few weeks followed by vacuuming every once in a while should do the trick. the alternative being moth holes. I choose a little cleaning now and then.

Keep it simple! Wooden dowels, 5 or so inches, angled say 30 degrees, small wooden cabinet knob screwed into the end of each dowel to avoid slip off! put 'em far enough apart for each hat. Then again, if you like metal, looks like you've got something there, but I think they need to be angled because I use an old expandable tie rack style coffee cup rack and the pegs are horizontal and the hats tend to slip off. All THREE of them.

I have a setup very close to that for my western hats. I did the dowel at an angle and tipped the dowel with moleskin so that the wood would not splinter or snag the liner. Honestly the door stops seem to distribute the pressure from the hat over a greater area. When choosing spurs to be used on my horse, I spent a great deal of time researching what works best and is the least painful to the horse. Actually a larger rowel ( the disk on the spur) the less pain inflicted. PPSI (pounds per square inch) the larger area the pressure is applied over the less painful it is. So this is sort of the same concept with spreading the hat weight over a larger area.

Good point. Wouldn't a wide cabinet knob on the end of the dowels accomplish the distribution of pressure? Metal stuff reminds me of the piece of beveled pipe on the handle bars of my old ten speed where they joined the frame that pointed backwards and spelled doom if I had to stop suddenly.

That would help and may even be better. The set up I am currently using spreads the weight over the entire width of the sweatband, rather than putting pressure on the felt, that may not be a able to retain its shape under pressure over time vs leather that should.

I like the look of your doorstops, Bud. Devoid of a hat--as I assume at least one must be through the course of the day--they look spiffy. I like the aesthetic of it.
