Hairstyle Help

I cruised the "Powder Room" for as long as I could before I started to feel a little bit...like an intruder .

I'm looking for a link or maybe some pics of a hairstyle from the late '30s to mid '40s for short hair. Short* hair - for a female, lest there be some confusion.

I've no problems with mid-thirties and earlier, but I'm not finding anything anywhere after that. Is there such a thing.

I appreciate anything anyone can point me towards.


*"short" is one of those words, seems like the more you say it, the more it feels like it's something you accidentally made up; not a real word ...skorts...

Short is a matter of opinion. To ladies who wear long hair, short could be shoulder length. To ladies who wear chin-length bobs, short could mean a 2in pixie cut. Chin-length to above the shoulders was the style for the early 30's. Longer hair was the style for late 30s and most of the 40's. Short have came back in in the 50's. If you are trying to go for an authentic 40's look, you probably won't achieve it with short hair. If you are just trying to have a vintage-inspired look, you could curl the front or top of the hair and wear a Rosie the Riveter style bandana in the back.

I asked the bartender to move the thread right after I posted it. I didn't want to water down all the mysteries by searching too hard . Yes, I did see some of the hairstyle threads there, and there was that particular link to the styles by era ( posted by Eloise? sorry if thats wrong; I cant remember just now ).
I wasn't necessarily looking for something costume-y, a la the "Rosie the Riveter" thing, but both practical and authentic. This is what we're working with here:

Maybe three weeks to a month longer ( if you can picture such a thing ).

"Vintage inspired" will likely be the path taken. As it is, it makes for some good earlier styles, but I was just wondering if something a tad later could be eked out.

Hmm, that's a tough one. I wore my hair like that about a year ago (I got a little bleach happy and my hair had to be cut off). I just wore my regular style and didn't try to make it vintage-y. The honest truth is that if your hair isn't long enough to wrap around a curler, you can't get a vintage style.

I kinda figured as much. Might have to troll for some hats ( and I'm sure you can imagine how much I'm gonna hate that... ). Even most of her hats have a '30s and before vibe.
The hair thing is just for a one shot deal, and I was hoping to be able to bring something to the table. Thanks again.

For a one shot deal...investigate wigs.

I don't know tons, but I am sure there are some that would be a decent option for later styles.

The thought had crossed my mind, and in the past there's been no particular aversion to their use. To my mind, though, it seems more practical ( because that's what this site is all about: practicality ) to bolster ones wardrobe with more useful items. You know, like hats....

kiltie, I think I might be the girl to help you! I used to have hair a little shorter than hers for a while, but eventually I wanted something a little more vintage looking and something I could style. This is a photo of what my hair looks like straight, but in the back it's very short, there's no layer longer than an inch or so. That was some personal non-authentic compromise I had to make. Curled, my hair stops right around the bottom of my ears.

Everyone likes having their hair short for different reasons, but for me, the fact that it's still 1) no more than chin length 2) short in the back and 3) I can style it to look shorter works for me, and may help you!

I think at least this length of hair is better for hats, too. When I had really short hair I never felt like I could pull off hats because there'd be nothing around my face.

...and now it's like the first pic I posted. I was a big fan of the Lee Miller hairdo ( still the wrong era, though ), but I guess it's one of those things you have to "do".

SayCici, your hair looks very nice, and I know exactly what you're talking about. Since her hair is course and wavy near curly, the "adolescent stage" always has her in the chair before it gets too long.

It definitely is an awkward stage of growing out! So maybe a promise of one of those new hats would help.
