so, I just called up a barber shop (sounded like an old owner) and asked him how much he charged, after asking - the guy hung up on me.

Does asking that question offend barbers?

Haha. I imagine this is a good sign he might be old school.
Kinda understandable he doesn't like it when customers call different barber shops to find the cheapest one without knowing about the quality. But then again hanging up on you is not very polite either.

Got a haircut today, I went with something more traditionally 40's for the first time. Kinda confused the barber a bit when I went in and asked if they did such styles, because I usually don't go with anything. I showed her some pictures of what I was looking for, and I think she did a swell job:

I got a haircut last week. I asked for the sides and back to be quite short. Here is my haircut! I am using Brylcreem, that I let build up (I have been doing this lately, and I find that Brylcreem works best when you let it build up, and only use shampoo once every other week.)

Jonathan Stout (another dancer) sports this style cut with a bit less wave. I'll have to ask him for instructions.

For those that are thining on top... keep it short on the sides and don't comb it over (ads 10 years), just keep it going back.

Finally got the much needed haircut. There is a great barbers in my town run by a couple of young guys who always pull off these really sharp cuts for just a tenner.
Basically had a less severe version of a cut I previously had where my sides were a no1 fade to no2 up to the part, this one pictured is a no2 fade to a no4.

I don't suppose anyone can recommend any non-slicked period hair cuts for men?

I have thick, Asian type hair (grows outwards rather than down) which grows very quickly - My current hairstyle (see above) grows out very quickly and while I like it - it does end up costing a lot of money to maintain.

Boots, great cut and a tenner seems to be a good price. How often do you go? Once a month? I wouldn't change a thing

I do tend to go once a month - however it is really pushing the boundaries of the cut by then; most of what makes it such a nice cut is lost in little over two weeks. I'd go more often but on the student budget I can't really afford to. I have no concerns with this current cut although I am always curious of less high-maintenance styles due to my rate of hair growth.

Though, for less maintenance and going between haircuts longer, I think you could always go with this style of pompadour haircut, as seen on this guy from A Kiss Before Dying (1956), a good movie by the way. The hair is a lot longer on the sides (also for causing the ducktail effect in the back) than your current cut, though, and it is well-slicked in place. It may also be too rockabilly looking for what you're after.

For a less slick, but still a normal early-mid 20th century period hairstyle, you could get a haircut like Charles Lindbergh had in this picture, hair flopping down the side and all. Again, it's a little longer on the sides than you may want to go for. I think this picture is some time during the earlier 1930s.

Finally, here's the pianist Glenn Gould in the early 1950s. It looks like he used less pomade or hair creams than usual, and it doesn't look that slick.
