I do hate when that happens. It then leaves you thinking, Okay, now how long will it take this to grow out...

It does look good, but if it's not what you wanted and you think it's too short, it can be a pain.

Oh, I think it's okay now. It's been a few weeks, so there was enough time for it to grow out. But yes, I also hate it when this happens. Not much you can do about it, eh? Good thing I'm wearing a hat...

Re the Brendan Fraser cut: Keep in mind, when combing forward to create a center part, all that hair will come to the tip of his nose. It appears shorter once parted and combed back. When it falls forward on its own, it comes to his eyebrows. If you do cut it too short, it will tend to stand up straight - but - it'll grow and you'll find the proper length for your head and face. Hope that clarifies the issue.

Hi guys,

Just thought I should let you all know about a Vintage hairdressers that do mens' cuts and shaving in Southampton, UK. Amazing place. The main lady there has been cutting and teaching hair since back in the day and now teaches those techniques to all her staff. They specialise in vintage styles, so you shouldn't have trouble asking for 30s, 40s, 50s styles at all.

They have this promotion online - I stole this pic from their Facebook group, but I am sure they won't mind as I'm telling you all about them!

Got my hair cut today, she got a good taper on the sides but the top still isn't long enough. Next time I'll tell her well short on the sides.

Something that has been on my mind (so to speak), is a feature of all the men in my family. I'm starting to thin at the back, not a lot but I'll probably have a proper bald patch by time I'm 35. Every man in my family gets a tonsure, though we don't go completely bald. What is the period-correct way to deal with a bald spot?

On going bald: for most men baldness has to do with the hormonal set up within ones body. It also is for many a sign of virility and "manlyness."

One thing is while personal vanity may lead one to hide it such a move tends to be a difficult road and in the end usually means that the vanity portion is more the most obvious and ridiculous than the baldness.

While I am not bald I have super fine hair that is thin, I find that medium to short hair works for me. In viewing men that are bald medium to short hair styles seem to make the best choice. Baldness and long hair tends to look like the guy from Rocky Horror or a Faganesque look that few find assurance in. A comb over tends to look bad and points to the insecurity of the wearer.

My suggestion is embrace it and don't worry. You can always shave your head which is considered a very rugged look -see the shaving threads in "General Acooterments."

My barber does mine for $AUS18 (£10) and I get a free beer with it

I'm sure someone's written this, perhaps even in this very thread, but the movie Public Enemies is a great source for period haircuts. From Depp and Bale's slick cuts, to Stephen Dorff's more severe style, they're all pretty inspirational.

I am getting my hair slowly but surely like the 1930's. Since i wanted to get it correct i went in search of this style online. I found this link. It has helped my wife out when we cut my hair. So i hope this helps everyone else out. I did get the idea of the haircut from Public Enemies, its just an awesome style, and just like flat-top said INSPIRATIONAL. It looks classic hands down. Whats funny is this link the drawing looks like Johnny Depp from Public Enemies.

I'm glad to find more people who are into hats and classic style like i am. I am new to the lounge, and excited to be here, i've been collecting felt hats since high school. I used to wear a homburg to school, always got the comment of hey Godfather. I hope the link helps those looking for this style out.

Speaking of cuts, can you barber-types give me an idea whit type of cut this is that Kevin Costner (as Thomas J. Murphy) is sporting in 3000 Miles to Graceland? Minus the mutton chops, I'm liking this (I can't grow sideburns anyway)...I usually wear a flat top, but this style has a bit more emphasis to the front...I'm going to see my local barber tomorrow, and would like an idea of what to tell him to do to achieve this....

I'm diggin' Kurt Russel's 'do also, but I don't have that much damn hair....

I got my hair cut again yesterday, the third time since I started trying for a vintage haircut. I go to the same place every time, but end up with a different person every time, too. This time the girl was obviously just out of beauty school and seemed very nervous. Partly, I think, because I had asked for something not common, and also she didn't seem too sure how to deal with where hairline and beard meet (she did just fine, though). It didn't help that her boss was hovering. But despite her apparent nervousness, she gave me the best cut yet, and she's the first one who actually left it alone on top when I asked her to. It's too bad I never know who's going to be in, otherwise I'd ask for her every time.
