It appears to be a cultural difference to me... I see that Spitfire is from Denmark... From what I gather, due to tight gun restrictions and overall lack of interest, it is no wonder that Spitfire would feel this way... [huh]

The mere existence of a gun shop in Copenhagen is a surprise given the limited number of qualified Danish consumers. Scandinavia in general and Denmark in particular are extremely peaceful societies in spite of, or perhaps because of, their notoriously brutal Viking origins. Today, outdoor sports, target shooting, and firearms collecting are consolidated socially unacceptable.

Given the almost suffocating governmental restrictions and regulations, together with the minimal interest in personal firearms ownership, how could a gun shop ever get started or survive? Maybe an even more intriguing question is, why would anybody want to take on the hard work and headaches of running a gun shop in Denmark? The answer is, like most of his American counterparts, Hojberg loves what he does.

The fascination with guns in those thread tends to centre around construction, materials, and craftsmanship. Pretty much what we talk about in suit or flight jacket threads.

for the record - as everyone here knows by now - i believe that handguns and assault weapons are so dangerous in the wrong hands that the ammunition for them should be banned for sale to the general public. (this point is not open for discussion in this thread.) This does not preclude my having an interest in their history, construction or general aesthetics. Gun threads are an entirely appropriate topic for discussion.

I used to collect guns...

But I stopped when I came to the conclusion that if I'm not using them and have no intention of using them for the intended purpose; killing animals and humans- then they're just dangerous sitting in my home.

Gangster gun culture is global- gun law does not bother these people because the guns are illegally obtained and owned anyway. Anti-gun law only disadvantages law abiding citizens- not criminals, who, by nature,
operate outside of the law.

Guns are viewed as an integral part of the era- an era of colonies, lands still untamed, adventures and it was bracketed by two world wars. Also note that this forum generates discussions of many topics other than Golden Era clothes.

We know that we all, to some extent, share some aesthetics and like to discuss other things, like movies, etiquette, modern and vintage cosmetics (BESAME, BESAME, BESAME is a thread I see popping all the time in the powder room, I just don't read it), etc.

But mostly I think it's just another topic for the curmudgeons to rant on...

Haha, I heard this from a middle aged gentleman that inspired me to research and purchase guns (and I wouldn't be surprised if he's registered on this forum and lurks). This was one of the factors that weighed heavily in my decision to purchase a revolver.

As I've pointed out previously on the FL, I'm not as bugged about guns qua guns as I am about the incredibly pervasive influence of gun culture. Used to be we didn't make such a big hairy deal about 'em. Of course that was before Dirty Harry and the Cold War and all.

Coming from NZ and having half my family farming I grew up with guns but all hunting and sporting. I still like game shooting and will be grouse hunting in the autumn.

But I must admit that I have not the slightest interest in handguns, assault rifles, etc. I don't hold it against anybody who does but it's just not what I was brought up with.

Just an observation:
Are you all so obsessed with guns, that you've got to have them all over.

It's been said in replies above, but please allow me to add my own spin. Firearms aren't an American obsession, but they are very much an integral part of our culture. Compared to European cultures, ours is young and still forming. Although the comparatively civilized suburbs and cities have been the focus of the past half century, most of our history centered on rural and even frontier life.

My parents, and their parents, and their parents, settled the Oklahoma Territory. Guns were among the tools of their daily lives. Consequently, although he was raised in town, my father grew up with guns and was taught by his father and grandfather to use them properly. And although he and my mother moved to a California suburb before I was born, he taught me to handle firearms, so they're a part of my life, too, but less so than previous generations.

Perhaps in future generations firearms will occupy a less prominent position in American life, as they do in European life. But in the grand scheme of things, we're not that far removed from the colonists and frontiersman of our past.

I agree 100%. I can't stand when I hear people saying "Guns made this country great." Statements like that have become a crutch for too many people in this country. Guns are but a means or a tool to accomplish an end, they didn't make this country great. Hitler had guns, did that make the Third Riech great? What matters are the minds/people behind it - brilliant strategists and leaders made this country great. Everyday people who gave up their lives or put their lives on hold to give all for their country gave us our freedom. Without that we're just a bunch of gun-toting animals.

And as I've said before on this subject, some of us Americans have *no* connections to firearms. My immigrant grandparents came to NYC around a hundred years ago, and they didn't know from guns. Both of my parents served in WWII, but neither felt the need of keeping any firearms around afterwards. (Actually, my mom got an M1 carbine in the 1960s and kept it for a while - but it basically just sat in a closet until she sold it.) I haven't fired a weapon since I was at boy scout camp in 1968...

So let's keep in mind that all generalizations are just that: there's way more diversity of experience in the US than just slinging around the term "gun culture" would have you believe. Some folks are indeed surrounded by guns and they're a key part of their family and/or local history, but there are also a great many of us for whom that's simply not the case.

Sorry, I was going to use another analogy, but I decided not to because I didn't want to run the chance of offending people with a generalization that might hit too close to home. For example, I didn't want to post "*insert analogy here* owned guns" and have a bunch of people post "but I'm *insert analogy here*, I take offense to that". I admit, it was blantant but it got the point across. I'm afraid I've never been good at this sort of thing, I apologize for not having the snarky repartee of others on the board.

Thank you all for some - by and large - very informative answeres. I too think we should talk much more about sex than guns.
Which made me think, that we do not do it here because of "youngguns" in the lounge. As a european that strikes me as downright strange.
Young people can handle guns freely but not read about sex:eusa_doh:

I also understands the collectors of guns or weapons. They are interested in the techniques, the craftsmanship etc. So am I. I even had a small collection of Napoleon aera pistols and sabres once.

Well enough for my part. I do not intend to start yet another gunthread.[huh]
