Hey guys, I happened to be taking my girlfriend up to school the other day (she's student teaching in Mentor, which is close to Cleveland.) and on the way home I was channel surfing across the FM band and came across this amazing station. It's actually based just south of Cleveland. They are a non profit station that has volunteer dj's, no commercials for the most part. Just good tunes. Big band stuff mostly. They've got a good variety and the best part of the whole deal is that are streaming. Check them out if you've got the chance. It's nice because I lose the station completely about 4 miles from my house. (They're broadcasting at 1000 Watts. IF they'd only up it to 1100 Watts! lol)

Here's the link: http://www.wkhr.org/

Enjoy!

I personally prefer community radio and it is so good that so many of them are going to that format. Well worth bookmarking! :)

Sounds like a great station, but I couldn't get the streams to work from the site. :( I'll try again later. Wish we had a station around here like this one.

A really groovy resource!

:arated: This station deserves tagging as a favourite and our support. Been listening for several hours and have heard much '40s and '50s music. Surely a radio time warp and a marvey background whilst we peruse the 21st century with our majik boxes.

Many thanks to Scuffy for his great catch.

One more once, a plug for 20s&30s music on Sunday evenings from 8pm-Midnite ET.

I've said this before too, but it bears repeating: Katt in Hat is absolutely right about WFUV's "The Big Broadcast" on Sunday nights, 8-12 NYC time. A magnificently entertaining and educational series!

Another station worth bookmarking for old-time jazz fans is NYC's Columbia University station, WKCR. While they aren't a full-time jazz station, they play several hours daily, and their frequent full-day birthday specials dedicated to classic jazz artists are fantastic. (And anything Phil Schaap hosts is worth a listen!) Plus, they're another commercial-free station. Check out the "Jazz" link on their main page for details:

Another station to try:

When I lived in Pueblo, the only station I listened to was KCME, an independent public radio station out of Colorado Springs. They are mostly classical, but Lenny Mazel has a jazz show on Saturday mornings that is nothing but very early jazz. I listened to the station all week, but Saturdays with "Sunrise Serenade" and his "Night Train" program were special treats. They now offer streaming.

From KCME's website:

Sunrise Serenade

A delectable smorgasbord of earlier jazz styles, Sunrise Serenade, aired on Saturday mornings from six until Noon (or earlier depending on the opera that follows), presents everything from ragtime, boogie-woogie and New Orleans jazz to small-group swing, the big bands and mainstream jazz. Hosted by Lenny Mazel, you may expect to hear the likes of Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Bix Beiderbecke, Art Tatum, Duke Ellington, Lester Young, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and countless other jazz legends.
