Last weekend we had some friends over and decided to watch a movie. After deciding not to go out and rent one we looked through the collection we have and found one the other couple had not seen. "O Brother, Where Art Thou?". It is one of my favorite comedies and after seeing it again I realized it is a great movie for vintage hats. It is set in the early 1930's and there are some great scenes in a town square where you see dozens and dozens of men in classic fedoras and caps. In fact just about every man and most women in the movie have a hat of some kind, from ragged to classic. Check it out if you haven't seen it.

Great film. There was a recent "Hat Movies" thread where I mentioned that many of the Coen Brothers movies are filled with wonderful hats. Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, The Man Who Wasn't There, and The Hudsucker Proxy are all fantastic hat movies.

Honeydripper, a film by John Sayles

is also a great hat movie... Actually it was a pretty good all-round movie with Danny Glover. Saw it at an art theater around here, probably go to video soon enough.

Never heard of it, but I love Glover. Hope to catch it soon.
By the by, in Places In the Heart... Glover wears a great beater!

:eek:fftopic: It's interesting that a question mark was included in the title of "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" because question marks in titles are considered bad luck in the film making industry. And still the film went on to do very well. :)

thanks Ipoke..many of those hats were mine and also much of the clothing was rented from us when we were still in the vintage biz. What a bugger to find 1930s coveralls!!!

O Brother... was a great flick. Often times I get the urge to "R-u-n-n-o-f-t!".
I also just saw another Coen movie, "No Country For Old Men", good film, lots of Western hats.

Ask the Dust is a so-so movie about the superb author John Fante. The clothing on the other hand is fantastic!

I come from a family of Dancers, My wife is a dance teacher and both my daughters dance, I have danced with my daughters on stage for the last 10 years. That being said, I just watched Guys and Dolls all by myself this morning and what a huge variety of hats in that movie. Plus you get to hear Marlon Brando sing! What a great movie!

Oh Brother!

This has to be one of my all time favorite films. We watch it with our kids all the time. They can recite almost every line of dialog. It is such a pleasure to see a film that has great writing, incredible camera work and brilliant acting.

This thread made me rent and re-watch "O Brother..." It's maybe not well known that "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" is the name of the fictitious movie that the picture director John L. Sullivan (Joel McCrae) is trying to make in "Sullivan's Travels", which I rented and watched last night. There are numerous references to "Sullivan's Travels" in "O Brother...", most notably both have a scene where prisoners are led into a cinema in chains to watch a movie. "Sullivan's Travels" is a fun movie, also good for a nice range of hats, but mostly for the stunning Veronica Lake.

"O Brother..." also reminded me of the John Sayles movie "Matewan" about the coal wars in West Virginia in 1920, which I also rented and watched again. This is a truly great historical movie, with really good actors early in their careers (esp. Chris Cooper and David Strathairn) and really fine use of hats to indicate economic and social status as well as style. If you've never seen it, I highly recommend it.

Wow I had forgotten about this film. I will be sure to check it out, it looks like a good one.
I ran across this photo from Matewan...
