A few years ago it became clear to my sister that she was eligible for DAR membership (my paternal grandmother Virginia was a long time member). My father fowarded me a copy of our family tree that was to be submitted with the application. When I came across the familiar name Howard Robard Hughes Jr. of Houston, Texas I asked my father if this was THE Howard Hughes and he got and little nervous, laughed and denied it. Later I asked my mother about this (she and my father had divorced about 25 years earlier and there was no love lost between them) and she confirmed that yes, Howard Hughes was my father's cousin. Armed with this information I approached the subject anew with my father. He apologized for the deception. Hughes was my grandmother's cousin. H explained what a great source of embarassment Hughes' antics had been for his mother's rather prim and zealously religious family, and that the name of Howard Hughes was never allowed to be uttered in his the presence of my grandmother or great grandmother.
Needless to say I got a big kick out of the whole thing.
