There are a lot of retro/vintage trends in clothing that millenials have brought back or are part of now.

Raw denim, vintage workwear, leather jackets, etc.

Pomade also had a major resurgence recently and a lot of millenials are in on that as well.

If you extend it to women's fashion, there are a lot of '80s inspired stuff being brought back as well.

I don't make fun of middle aged men who dress their age, I make laugh (internally) at anyone who tries too hard or is not trying at all.

An middle-aged guy trying to look young is hilarious as is a teenager in a man bun, Yeezeys, and those idiotic saggy crotch pants or joggers.

Just as tragic to me is anyone who just doesn't even try. These are the middle-aged men wearing dad jeans... and the millenials who also wear dad jeans. I just wish more people would put some sort of effort into how they dress, even if I disagree with what they are doing. Just following all the trends or not trying at all is painful to watch.

A perfect example is at my work. Most of my co-workers are in their 40's and 50s.

I work in sales so I generally wear a suit when seeing customers.

The pants may be a little too tapered, but I'm not shelling out $2g's plus for a custom fit that actually works.

Some of the managers wears those pathetic excuses for black dress shoes that look like an orthopedic shoe had sex with Homer Simpson's shoes.
They look like this, except they're worse.
men-039-s-shoes-in-winter-warm-dad-old-leather.jpg

Then they toss on an oversized blazer that is the shade of grey that is just different enough from their grey dress pants to make them look horrible and call that professional.

It's a joke.

There are other sales guys that are the same age that wear more traditional dress shoes in colors other than black and 'grey that used to be black,' vests, ties, etc. I don't agree with their style choices always. I despise pleats for example, but their clothes do at least fit properly, even if I don't agree with the cut and it's obvious they put at least some effort into their clothing even if they didn't spend much money on any of it. That's all I ask for...

Those Simmons Bilt jackets...

Anyway, this guy in a suit with s clipboard rings my doorbell today and says "Have you got any old alcohol that you don't want?".

It took me a really long time to process this oxymoronic (to me!) question, before I finally sputtered out "No."

With that, this guy excuses himself and leaves.

Unless winos are upping their game, I can't imagine what this guy was doing. Are there people out there that say "Sure! Just wait a moment and I'll bring you half a bottle of vodka, and a nice Sauvignon Blanc!"?

What do you reckon was going on? Am I missing out on free drinks?

Agreed with everything you've said but those shoes... No matter where I worked, there was always an ensemble of guys you describe and they'd always wear these same exact shoes. There were days I actually wanted to ask them why. Are they just so comfortable? Do they actually like them? When have they given up on life? And I really try not to care about what people wear but some of that stuff... I just can't help it. Not 'cause I necessarily find it ugly but... Same reason why you'd want to tell someone they have food on their face. You wanna help people. XD

Anyway, one day my best friend decided it's time to get a new pair of shoes. He never invested any real money into footwear before and was only wearing knock-off sneakers up until that point so after a long and tiresome search - we went to every damn shoe store in every damn mall we could reach - he tells me he has found a perfect pair. Guess what was the perfect pair. . .

That was two years ago and he's just so happy with them that I still don't have a heart to say something.

Tried the boots over jeans thing. It looked like I was wearing wellies. Not a good look...

Ha, yes, it can do if the boots are very chunky / loose fit and the jeans are on the tight side. Definitely depends on the boots and the fit....

Sid pulled it off, imo:

Lower, looser boots make it look very wrong:

As a rule, I think it's a look that pulls off much better with the Brit-style boots from the likes of Lewis/Aviakit which zip up tight and neat over the jeans, rather than the looser, American style engineer boots. Notably, of course, it seems that whereas the Brit look evolved from tall, neat fitting riding boots worn over the jodhpurs, the American engineer boots seem most often to have been worn under the jeans. Practicality aside, the Us style boots definitely look better that way. I like the Lewis boots both ways, though it's unlikely most of them would do up over the cut of jeans I prefer!

Dude: you sound like you are the fashion police at your company. Are you the boss? In sales, production counts a lot more than the kind of shoes the sales guy wears.

As I recall Edward is a barrister-at-law but obviously is a man who is knowledgeable about a number of other things.

I'd say that with Sid, it's not so much that he pulled something off but rather that he did it.

I generally wear either Loake or Trickers brougues for work and one of the guys I worked with would poke fun at me for wearing what he described as pottery shoes, he always wore those Cotton Traders black suade slip ons, it takes all sorts!

Academic specialist in media law, seeing ot the academic side of training the next generation of barristers, among others.... (A professor in US speak, butg notg (yet) in the UK, where 'Professor' is a specific rank).

I think, though, the comment above was aimed at Dudewhattheheck - i.e. 'Dude' as a name, rather than a generic noun. ;)

Ha, well..... he was a one-of, that's for sure. I've always wondered what would have happened him had he not gotten caught up in the Nancy Spungen circus. Yeah, he made his own (poor) choices and should never be stripped of responsibility for the same, but I don't want to Live This Life, Deborah Spungen's biography of her daughter, is a real eye-opener. Absent the heroin addiction and the sand demise that followed it, I could have seen a sixty-one year old Sid nowadays doing Campari ads and other novelty appearances, after a long career as a novelty pop act a la Captain Sensible's solo adventures. Maybe he'd even turn up in a lot of cameo roles in various films playing versions of himself. He wasn't particularly great as an actor, but hey - neither was Elvis, and Sid did look great in the Swindle (probably the only Pistol who did).

One persons fashion is another persons failure IMHO.

Where what you like and be comfortable in what you wear. :)

It's a good general rule. A second might be "Don't turn up on a board dedicated to a specific style and tell those thereon that they've got it all wrong and need to get with the programme." ;)

I wouldn't be able to hold it in like you. I would have to tell him. It is very painful, though.

Let's be honest, we are really talking fashion here, not style. It is not the same everywhere. Whilst it might be acceptable to wear your trousers outside your boots in Alabama, it would be unwise in Mid Wales. What would be the point of wearing boots if your trousers weren't tucked in properly?

Hey man, I got Crocs in the front yard, Crocs in the back yard! For running out doing chores - including watering, chickens, etc., they're great. Now I think I'm safe saying you've never seen and never will see me here showing off a jacket wearing them.
I know "some" have, but not me. And my favorite pair are my furry Vikings purple and gold. Those are for winter chores :)

The sanctimonious denigration of other’s clothing choices advanced by people wearing clothing ensembles that I personally find displeasing is particularly amusing. The self-appointed fashion police might not be as qualified as they narcissistically deem themselves.

But that's the thing - some people make no clothing choices when they could be doing so much better.

Those who wear a pink shirt and light tan boots with a dark sports jacket and slacks shouldn't throw stones lol
