There are numerous western styled Stetsons that have names inside the hat that Stetson did not include in their catalogs. Could this be of the same nature? I dunno. But, I want to know. regards Fedora

I want to add a little here but only from personal experience. I will never forget this, I guess but then I already do not recall all the details . What I recall crystal clear is this guy named Marvin Blackburn owned the hat we restored and I personally worked on it and that was maybe 10 years ago but it was a 1000X Stetson. I cannot recall his whole letter but I remember it saying he got if off some one that bought a defunct train car that was full of undelivered things including a wooden crate of many ruined Stetson hats all 1000X . He got one of the very few that were saved.
I have to say I am totally confused about there denoting of how many xes the hats have but I have found that it did not mean a lot with most other hat companies in general and Stetson like many other hat companies of now adays probably made hats for small to mid size hat companies with their label in them or also many stores got private labeling. I have seen may hats with just New York store names stamped on them. I don;t know if any one wants to call out there or not but I got this number as their main headquarters if some one does. 1-972-494-0511. I guess they would have records of all this and would probably have a museum or something like that there and some one that knows all that stuff.

Well now I heard that sound clip and that is a lot of reading Sharptoyes I would save that information in that acrobat book and read it later but I must not have the program for it. You guys on here seem to be a wealth of information to sift through.

I have talked to the folks at Hatco, that owns the Stetson and Resistol name along with Charlie One Horse. No one has been there long enough to know anything. I doubt if there are any original employees of the Stetson company around, since the name has been sold at least twice since 1970. I know I was told by one of the order takers at Hatco that most folks there have not been around very long. Quite a turnover I assume. The modern Stetsons that I have seen are low quality stuff. Of course, I have not held any top of the line hats in hand, so I can't speak for those. Fedora

What do you mean by never noticing anyone on here refusing pictures or any hat????? You are a new member, right? Have you asked anyone to post pictures? If you take the time to read prior posts, there are MANY folks here who post pictures, appropriate to their discussion or post.
If you love to look at well made old hats, I suggest you buy "STETSON HATS 1865 - 1970"

Hey Zane, I understood what you were saying about the pics. That book is available on ebay from time to time, around 35 bucks. You mentioned ginseng hunting. Years ago, I used to backpack with a guy from Tenn. who knew a family back up in the mountains that hunted and harvested ginseng. We even used to have it down this far South, but I have never seen any. Would not know what to look for. I do hear it is quite profitable to sell. Here is a gray vintage Cavanagh that I reblocked and put another ribbon on.

No offence taken. . Yes I did post about chicken feathers, as you can figure out, Mr. Jamespowers was looking for dress fedora hat feathers...the chicken reference was a joke. Did you get it ? HA HA HA....
I did get it on second reading and sorry to be so slow.
Our life style here must be so different than where you live that it would be incomprehensible to either of us to understand the other fully. Chickens here are both meat and eggs to many home farmers and a considerable rest of us would not eat an egg not farm raised as there is no comparison. I can still recall a time when down feathers were plucked from chickens , ducks ,geese and turkey to make pillows.
Many of my neighbors still live a sustained life of gardening and hunting and raising their own animals for food ect. While the adjoining County has more millionaires per capita than any other county in USA , they still frequently live quite much as they were raised and the only main difference is the size of their homes and the age of their cars.
I spent 10 years making hats for folks that could hardly afford a hat and they had to scrimp and save for one. They insisted on a hat that would remain both serviceable and classy and it was their Sunday go to meeting hat and also one they duffed at each lady and dawned on each visit outside the front door.
I say they when I should say we as I am still in that boat of tradition and little has changed in my life except for adding some wrinkles and Grey hair.

No, no felted edge, but I wish it did have one. This hat used to be a homburg, with the binding on the edge. What you are seeing is where I removed the binding. I did clean that area up, and this pic was taken right after I took it off the block and just creased it.
Ah, a man who knows what real chicken and real eggs are supposed to taste like.
What you buy nowadays is so full of chemicals and growth hormones that it is a wonder we are still around to even talk about it. I grew up on a farm, and we raised our food, except for coffee, sugar and flour. I thought years of smoking cigars had ruined my taste buds, but discovered recently that yard chicken still taste the same as it did when I was a lad. Eggs too. No comparison to what is called chicken and eggs nowadays. I have eaten my share of squirrels too. If you ever need any help understanding our urban friends here Zane, give me a holler. Ain't it the truth. I have been tempted to go and buy a few chickens so I know what I am eating. When I was a kid, when we got hungry for chicken, we just walked outside, caught one, wrung his neck, and it sure was tasty.

Do you think I could trade a sack of them to that hat you are wearing? I know where the roost at and can pick me off a sack full of them expensive new fangled yard birds now.
You know life is some what strange any more to me anyway. I heard a eulogy of Uncle recently and how he survived several wars starting with WW1, saw the Automobile come in to full swing and bargained for a ride on the first one that came to town at 14 cents as he did not have the full 15 cent fee when it was renting out rides. Then watched aviation come and progress. Saw radio grow from infancy to modern days, watched as TV was born and grew. He predated country music and watched as mountain traditional music evolved from Scottish and English Ballads to "Bluegrass" and eventually to Country Music right there in your home state Michaelson, in a town call Bristol.
The other thing he watched was prices increase and supply and demand during a era called the great depression and beyond.
He never lost a love of hats and I never seen him in a poker game or any where out side the house without one.

When I sit and ponder what in the world ever happened to hats and their extreme popularity, I often wonder if it was not lost in a maze of events that the world calls progress and if things really do not run a bit too fast now and if it is all worth it to gain so much and lose every thing of value and worth in one fell swoop.
I will forfeit the pulpit now and ask our honored guest to speak their pieces.

Fedora, I know some city folks that recently went to a farm store to buy a chicken ( a ditty ) as we know baby chicks as and was told they had to buy 6. Well to end a long story short you can get you a few chickens and raise them in any small lot where ever you are. I have the luxury of just going and getting one off the neighbors any time they stop laying and making me a pot of chicken and dumplings on a big fat old hen. You add you a few garden grown sweet taters to the ashes of the fireplace and You have a complete hearty meal.
I just ring their necks like you did and carry them home by the feet and they are well drained by then. I end up paying a dollar for what my sister out in Cali- forni ( that is not making fun of any one here, just amuzed by the new Governator) pays 32.00 for when it is labeled free range.
In the end here is where I get stuck and maybe some one can pull me out.
Is it worth it to make a 100,000.00 + a year and have to spend 150,000.00 a year to live or is it better to make 10,000.00 and live on 9000.00 ? I used to hear from the Dad of the man that taught me to make hats how it was not what you make but what you can save. The shop owner had to ask....
"I see you're raising chickens."
City man,"Yep, but not having a whole lot of luck."
