Took a gamble, but alas, it turned out too small (why do sellers never wait the size?)
Estimated 30s Hückel Foulaed Soleil. wonderfully soft medium hair length velour, dry creases easily. I love thr bow treatment.
I ask the same indeed.I usually ask them to find the tag under the sweat to confirm the size. Most non-hat people don't know where those tags are.
Maybe you can pass this one to Stefan @steur , i thinks he has a size 56.Took a gamble, but alas, it turned out too small (why do sellers never wait the size?)

That's a wonderful hat, Wayne. Too bad about the size. We've all been there. I do the same as Randy and Marcel do: I ask sellers to look underneath the sweat.Took a gamble, but alas, it turned out too small (why do sellers never wait the size?)

Wayne, Super! Very sorry about the size. It's mélange felt with a Soleil like finish. I don't believe I have encounter this before. The other JHS mélange have "Rauh" finishes which are not Soleil like. I like seeing these Japan market JHS. The paper labels having full descriptions (and in English) should prove helpful. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to look into this in detail.Took a gamble, but alas, it turned out too small (why do sellers never wait the size?)

Stefan, Great to see! I can't recall if I have come across a VEB Luckenwalder Hutfabrik "Elegant" in a sale / auction. I have a soft spot for these DDR era hats.VEB Luckenwalder Hutfabrik Elegant fedora in a grey colour called Nickel. Size 56 with the bound brim at almost 6 cm and the crown at 9,5cm at the center dent.
Nikolaus, Thank you for posting this later Szaszi Soft Felt. It's definitely well made and the felt and finish look great. That is fantastic that you were able to visit with the Szaszi owner Shapira. As we know Szaszi goes back at least a 100 years but I am not sure if I have encountered any WWII era of older examples. If I have they have been in small sizes. Please post photos of the Szaszi Homburg when you have time.I just bought two Szaszi hats. This one is a grey fedora with a black band. As I live in Vienna I thought I contact the current Szaszi owner Shapira (with the expansive hats). In short: I visited him for nearly one hour, he was really very very nice and cleaned and steamed both hats (the second is a Homburg), he even showed me some of his ready-to-wear/buy hats. They start from 450 to about 800/1000 euros. As most of you are very longer and deeper into Austrian hats than me: If you ever visit Vienna ask for an appointment - his workplace is more than fallen out of time and incredible.
Both my hats are made about 1975. You can find some of them on Austrian classified - but hardly older ones before ww2 or even 50/60is.
Thank you, Steve. A few years ago quite a lot of these East German hats could be found in vintage clothing stores in Amsterdam. That supply dried up completely. To be fair, most of them were kind of ho-hum hats.Stefan, Great to see! I can't recall if I have come across a VEB Luckenwalder Hutfabrik "Elegant" in a sale / auction. I have a soft spot for these DDR era hats.
There's one on Ebay right now, size 54Stefan, Great to see! I can't recall if I have come across a VEB Luckenwalder Hutfabrik "Elegant" in a sale / auction. I have a soft spot for these DDR era hats.
Marcel, I have one in your sizeThere's one on Ebay right now, size 54
Nikolaus, Thank you for posting the Szaszi Homburg photos! Can you please check for a paper label behind the sweatband? If you find one it would be interesting to see a photo. Same with the Soft Felt. Here is the Szaszi Homburg, black, about 1975 (despite the different label), additionally it says Perfekt (no more labels beneath). I bought it as a 58, Szaszi says 56,5/57 (which confuses me). It has one small issue I didn't even notice - but the Szaszi owner saw it in the second. He said that the hat has been redone once completely: the front became the back ... You can remove that part with ,Perfekt' on - is it to stabilize the hat while you wear it?
I looked into some Austrian archives: I found only hints in old address books. There is a Michael Szaszi back in about 1865, around 1900 and later Hermann Szaszi and till ww2 Hans Szaszi. There is one bowler on austrian classified with a Hans Szaszi label. Szaszi might have done kind of military hats as well.
Yet another great find, Steve. Very stylish.Brüder Dobesch Wien "Norma", 58 cm, possibly later 1950s. Brüder Dobesch Wien hats are more difficult to find (and most are Homburgs) considering they were a famous Austrian hat company. This Soft Felt has a nice form and a stylish bow design. I also like the felt color and brim treatment. Josef Prix Wien was a famous Vienna Men's Clothing store.
