German & Austrian Hutmachers

I solved a mystery (it's been a long while)! Back in 2021 I acquired an Austrian Wool Stiff Felt with no company mark on the liner and sweatband and only this "St. Veit" (a district of Vienna) mark on the paper label. At the time I made many searches and wasn't able to come up with anything.

Yesterday (10/30/24) I was looking through some digital copies of Deutsche Hutmacher Zeitung for trademarks and I came across this trademark in the Jan. 11, 1930 DHZ (see below). I have looked at this trademark page many times but for some reason I missed / overlooked these Bossi Wien "St. Veit" trademarks. It could be I forgot about this Austrian trademark page, when searching for the "St. Veit" mark, because it was in DHZ. (By the way there is also a previous page of German trademarks.)

Notice there are separate trademarks for Fur Felt Hats and Wool Felt Hats.

I have always been on a look out for Bossi Wien Soft and Stiff Felt Hats but I haven't found any in my size and I don't believe I found any from the WWII era or earlier. Here is a Bossi Wien page on my website with more information. There is also a second Bossi Wien Stiff Felt listed that I found back in January.

Excellent detective work, Steve. Always nice to be able to add a piece to the puzzle.

The add for this one straight away caught my eye. It is however not my size and out of my price range, but worth posting it here, because it's such an interesting piece and it shows the label. So not my hat.

I saw that one. Bid on it, but the seller didn't accept my bid. She was asking too much for me! :-(

Hello, I'm new to the FL and relatively new to hats. I just bought my first real hat at Huvuds (Mikael does fantastic work) and I found this semi-vintage Austrian hat. The guy who sold it to me said it's rabbit - I'm not experienced enough to say that 100%. It is at least sold by an Austrian company that used to sell their own hats. The hat is in a shiny deep blue colour from Wolf-Hüte Helga Pernold. That company and a small store in the small Lower Austrian town of Mistelbach still exists. The label tells me it's not really old. I found an article in a local newspaper: Wolf Hüte seems to be 122 years old and run by the same family. I already phoned the current owner: He said the first owner before the 2nd world war made hats on his own but for a long time their hats were made by some companies. I will visit him in the coming weeks to get more infos. And maybe there are real vintage hats.

Maybe someone here has more information on Wolf?

Greetings from Vienna, Niky

And here is my second post: I'm searching for more information about Viennese hatmaker Szaszi. And I'm talking about the old company. Sure I know that store and workshop in Mariahilferstraße still exist and that guy is making maybe the most expensive hats in the world. Shapira says on his website that the company was founded in 1858 and quite famous. The last Szaszi-heir died in the second world war, Franz (he or his father worked at Habig) and Josefine Caletka took over. In 1996 Shapira took over.
You can always find Szaszi hats on Austrian classifieds but I found no information to date these hats etc.. Even on the fantastic ' Austrian Hat Company' site by habigman (I guess @mayserwegener on FL) I could not find information.

Can anyone help?

Thanks, Niky
