Great looking Klapphut! E. Trescher were hat shops in Freiburg Baden. Here is a listing from "Klockhaus' kaufmännisches Handels- und Gewerbe-Adressbuch des Deutschen Reichs Volume 7 1927".

Is there any paper label or company mark on or behind liner?

There were a number of Klapphut factories in Germany. Including the largest in Europe and probably the World.

Tonak Hückel "Jota" "Seal Velour", 57cm possibly 1953 based on the Paper Label. This Velour is interesting because it has a Hückel "Jota" "Seal Velour" Crown Patch and Tonak Sweatband and Paper Label. Based on the Paper Label markings It appears it was made for the Czech market. The Sweatband was badly damaged so I had to replace it. Also some dye seepage into the Band / Bow. I am this here because the Hückel "Jota" "Seal Velour" marking.

Too bad about the sweat, Steve, but a wonderful hat nonetheless. Thanks for showing it!

Ottmar Reich "Insuperable" "Asa", F.P. 6, Eng. 7 1/4, 59 cm, possibly earlier 1900s. This Kreissäge / Straw Boater is really interesting. It has a very Wide Black Band (8 cm, 3 5/32 inches) with a Pleated Bow paired with a Narrow Brim. The Bow has a Mother Pearl button. The Sweatband is made of very thin crosshatched textured leather that has hardened. The Liner Mark of an America Indian is really special. The American Indian was a common motif in late 19th Century and early 20th Century Germany. There is also a black Cord at the base of the Crown which is typical of the time. It's rare to find an old German Kreissäge in this size range especially one that is this unique. Ottmar Reich was originally a Straw Hat factory and in the 1920s started to also make Felt Hats.

The photo of the paper label was taken by the Seller and in the process he slightly damaged the Sweatband so I didn't want to take a risk of further damage trying to take a better one. The three size types are located at the bottom of the paper label.

There is another Ottmar Reich "Insuperable" that was found by back in 2009 which is from a later time period.

The Mother of Pearl button solved the mystery of the white thread stitch at the bottom of center of the bow on this Ottmar Reich Kreissäge of mine. For some reason I overlooked the Ottmar Reich "Insuperable" posted above.

Don't know when the Ventilo system was trademarked. Steve @mayserwegener will be able to tell us that. Somehow doubt though that it actually belonged to Goebbels. Pictures of him wearing a hat only show one hat as far as I can tell and it isn't this one. Goebbels was a doctor (not a medical doctor) and he seems the kind of person that would insist on that title being on the sweatband of his hat. So Dr JG or Dr G seems more likely than just the JG.

Hi all,

I just purchased second hand from Austria a very nice fedora marketed as Stetson Royal/Oberwalder. It features a light gray felt color and a really decent felt quality, a 2 1/2" wide brim and a black 1 3/4" black grosgrain band. The label says "MF Michigan Royal". No size is given, but it fits me with my 58.5cm perfectly.

I like the hat very much for its rather wide brim and its neutral color which I can combine easily.

Any ideas when this hat might have been manufactured and by which company?

Ulrich

Bob, I haven't been able to find patent info on "Ventilo". This hat is definitely early 1940s most likely 1930s because the P. & C. Habig Berlin Store at Friedrichstrasse 82a did not survive WWII. This Soft Felt was made at the P. & C. Habig Wien factory for the P. & C. Habig Berlin Store at Friedrichstrasse 82a. I am not sure if it was modified so I would have to get better look at it. I don't believe I have seen a P. & C. Habig Wien Soft Felt with side vents. I don't see any residue from a crown patch so not sure if it originally had liner. It does have a great look to it. Would be interesting to see more detailed photos and if it has a paper label. I have no idea if it belonged to Joseph Goebbels. I read the providence at website but it's lacking detail. Was it sold?

Ulrich, Super find! I am not sure what company made this Stetson or the exact time period (it's most likely 1970s or later). What is interesting is Brent ("Deadlyhandsom" who liked your post) also recently found a Oberwalder Wien (not a Stetson) Homburg on Ebay (see link below). Oberwalder Wien appears to be a retail location so they sourced your Stetson "Michigan" "Royal". I will check with the Ebay seller to see if they can provide photos of the paper label.

I know that Mayser had the license to make Stetson Hats in Germany. Your hat could be later when Friedrich W. Schneider (F.W.S.) Köln took over the Stetson brand for Europe which they have to this day. F.W.S. sourced hats from different hat companies. Is this the only paper label behind the sweatband?

As I mentioned above It's also possible Oberwalder Wien or some other company in Austria had the license for Stetson when this hat was made but I would have to look into that.

Mayser "In 1954, Curt M. Zechbauer's son, Peter M. Zechbauer, acquires the licence of the American hat factory of Stetson for Mayser."

Can you please provide a photo of the Stetson foil stamp at the rear of the sweatband?
