"Wiener Mode (Viennese Fashion)", measures 58 cm, Crown Open 6 inches, Brim 2 inches, Back Bow, possibly 1930s. This one has has some major insect damage and wear issues but still interesting. There isn't a paper label and I can only make out "Wiener Mode (Viennese Fashion) on the liner. The Velour has a longer nap but not quite Soleil. The Velour has a vibrant color with high gloss and easily dry creases.

"Wiener Mode" is barely visible at the bottom. Looks like an eagle but can't make out the crest. Any ideas? I will see if I can come up with a better photo.

A very cool, older hat. It looks like it was made just for Stefan @steur !

There is no doubt that this type of finish has a particular charm and it is increasingly rare to find specimens in good condition. Steve has the best collection seen so far.
huckel-prima-4-r-jpg.208017

Huckel "Prima" size 5 or 57 cm.
huckel-prima-5-r-jpg.208018

In excellent condition and ready to be worn by those who have a head of this size
huckel-prima-2-tris-r-jpg.208019

The velour is magnificent, thick and very well preserved, and the hat has an unimaginable lightness.
huckel-prima-interno-r-jpg.208020

Built in Czechoslovakia and imported into France in Poitiers exactly some time after the Second World War

For exact dating Steve will be kind enough to provide it :)
huckel-prima-6-r-jpg.208022

These are the measures: the brim are 6.5 cm, the crown 13 and the ribbon is 5 cm high.

I know I promised to let hats not of my size be avoided, but beautiful ones are hard to let go of

Stunning Daniele! I suspect I might've been the one bidding against you - now you're making me regret not going for more! :p

Steve, I picked up this Mayser Superbe from Daniele and may have found another big clue. The date is stamped on the back of the sweat although the year itself is smugged. The 4.FEB. is clear. With a strong magnifying glass the year looks like 1956 or 1966. Would one of those dates be more plausible than the other?

20200204_132500.jpg

A magnificent example of German headwear
View attachment 201579
Echter Mayser "Superbe" size 58 or 7 1/4 in the United States. Sometimes the hats of Central Europe of this size are perfect for my head, but this is a tight 58:rolleyes:
View attachment 201580
It has a felt color and a very interesting and classic brim+ribbon combo and finishes for Mayser, Huckel and other brands of those producers with the addition of wind cord, rare to find in hats sold in Europe. Sometimes it happens for those distributed in Germany, I remember having a Borsalino with that thing
View attachment 201581
The measurements are as follows: the crown is about 11 cm. bashed, the brim is 6.5 centimeters and the ribbon is 3 centimeters
View attachment 201582
It has a small flaw: that of having the lining detached for at least 50% of its circumference, for the rest it is perfect. It was sold in Bremen - Carl Sick shop
View attachment 201583
This is the paper label that certainly will be much more decipherable by Steve who is the leading expert on these European productions
View attachment 201584 View attachment 201585
What I really like about this hat is the change in color of the felt in different light conditions and, above all, its proportionate profile
Too bad it is a hat that will have to find an home

Daniele, Sorry about the size. That is a fantastic looking Surperbe. My guess is later 1950s. Mayser's sometimes have wind cords. The earlier ones just have loops and no buttons. I have two pre 1940 Echter Borsalinos with loop wind cords.

Randy, Great to see you ended up with it. It's possibly 1956. Does it have a paper label? Is the liner stitched in?

I just saw the photo of the paper label and liner stitching so definitely 1956.

Wonderful Steve, thanks for the confirmation.
Randy, Thanks. Mayser Ulm production facilities were severely damaged during WWII. All (or most) hat production moved to Lindenberg while Ulm facilities were rebuilt (from what I can remember that was around the mid 1950s). Felt hat production started in Lindenberg in the late 1920s. I have no idea how to tell where a Soft Felt Hat was made. Up to WWII most paper labels have "Mayser Ulm" but not sure if that means the hat was made in Ulm. Post WWII it's rare to find a paper label with Mayser Ulm on it. I have a pretty good record of date stamps plus paper labels (see my website). The paper label like the one on your hat is mid to later 1950s but I have no idea if the hat was made in Ulm or Lindenberg.

Excellent info again, Steve, thank you. Nothing much more on the hat except the hat shop (Carl Sick Jnh. Wilh. Groos BREMEN) and the Mayser logo under the still-pliable cellophane. The felt is very smooth (call it plush) and what I would say mid-weight; light but not blow-off-your-head feather light. The hand is also a step above my late 50's 3X Stetson and also my Mayser homburg that is a comparable age.

Let me work to reattach the liner and give it a nice crease and I'll post more pictures.

Randy, Looking forward to seeing your results. I have mentioned but Mayser moved their fur cutting in Ulm to Portugal in the mid 1960s. In the late 1980s they moved felt production to Portugal via FEPSA. Mayser was the major felt producer in Europe and probably the World. They put FEPSA on the map. Mayser diversified in the 1960s so not dependent on the hat industry.

Absolutely gorgeous effervescent green velour, Steve.
Do you have an idea who the maker is? German, Austrian, Czech? Difficult to make out the logo. If it is an eagle, what kind of eagle would depend on the country of origin and whether or not it's pre or post 1935.

Thanks for the history re Mayser and FEPSA, Steve. I didn't know that. Very interesting

Found this one today in Copenhagen, Hückel Prima. Talk about a petting hat. It's very similar to one Daniele posted at the end of January, though this one has a back bow. I'm guessing the same time frame, late 1920s-1930s.

By the shape of the crease inside and out, it looks like it had a crease clip at some point.

The sad thing is, it's way too small for me. I just had to have it though.

Steve, Thanks! It appears to be the Austria Hungary Double Eagle but it's not from that time period. It came from a seller in Graz, Austria. It also has Wiener Mode on the liner so probably of Austrian origin.

Steve, Super! Thanks for picking it up. I think the "A V" on the paper label could be Alpha Velour. Sometimes you see this type of mismatch with JHS.

Here is a JHS "Prima" that Daniele recently found and it has he "A V" on the paper label.

Thanks for the links, Steve. Your site is really invaluable.
Apart from the bow, Daniele's reminds me very much of mine.
I remember yours from when you originally posted it. Wonderful colour and finish on it. I bet Robin Hood would be green with envy
