Matt, Thanks! I was searching for 1950s information because of the hat. I also found the Hernalser Hauptstrasse 9. location for Josef Vechet in my copy of 1926 Austrian Hat Guide. (center of Page 25)

Josef Vechet is also listed as member of the Vienna Hat Makers Cooperative, Journeyman's Examination Committee on the Employer's side. (top of Page 12)

I found the IX. Währinger Straße 18. and XVII. Hernalser Hauptstraße 9. in the Adolph Lehmann's allgemeiner Wohnungs-Anzeiger 1939.

I am assuming the Hernalser Hauptstraße 9 location changed to Hauptstraße 11 (next door). The post WWII online info is restricted and there is nothing I could find online for post WWII. I am going to make contact with St. Peter in der Au N.Ö to see if they have a record of a Vechet Hüte. There wasn't anything listed in the 1926 Austrian Hat Guide for that location.

That's great, Steve: I knew you'd be able to find more information with the resources you have. So it's clear now that J. Vechet started out on Hernalser Hauptstrasse and opened the branch on Währinger in the late '30s. The store in St. Peter probably didn't open until after the war—it's a good idea to check there. But I do find it strange that information for the 1950s isn’t available. Regardless—it’s a great hat anyway.

Matt, Thank you! The problem is finding later information online because of privacy and copyright restrictions. 1950s+ address and telephone books are not available online like WWII and earlier. I asked the lady that sold me the hat if she knows anything but I haven't heard back yet.

Matt, I couldn't find post WWII Vienna Telephone and Address Books available online. From what I can gather this is due to privacy laws. I believe they are available to view in person or possibly request a search but that wasn't straight forward. I did find this Vienna business registry "Handelsregister Wien : mit dem genauen Wortlaut der amtlichen Protokollierung. Wien : Jupiter-Verl., [1.]1949(1948) - 12.1959; [...]" but couldn't find "Vechet-Hüte" listed in any of volumes available online.

I decided to check with the Library Congress in Washington, DC and they actually have post WWII Vienna Telephone Books. They were able to find a listing for "Vechet-Hüte" in the "Amtliches Telephonbuch Wien 1954, Page 353".

55529895100_9d86de3d50_c.jpg

Here are pages 352 and 353 (see "Vechet-Hüte" at the bottom center) that they sent me. I am sure there is valuable additional information on pages 351 and 354 and elsewhere in the telephone book. I live close by Washington, DC so I will go down to the Library of Congress and go through all the their German and Austrian Address and Telephone books. Also whatever else they have. Not sure why I never thought to do this.

I visited the Library of Congress yesterday and was able to scan Vienna Telephone books (see below). I was able confirm that "Vechet Hüte" was in business up to at least 1957. I am going to go back and scan all their German, Austrian and other European countries Telephone Books. Almost all are post WWII which is good because those telephone books are not available online in the EU due to privacy restrictions.

Dobesch Wien "PRÄSIDENT", 57 CM, possibly 1970s. The Blue Felt has a nice Smooth Finish. It's Machined Blocked but has a interesting Form for being later. Also has well executed Box Bow. It was sold out of the German Market. I need to check into how long Dobesch Wien lasted.

Very cool find, Steve. They don't show up that often in blue by any brand. Bow and brim treatment are a bonus.

Collins Wien Luxus in a very attractive brown color. Seller said it was a size M and no label. I found the label ...... yes.....it has size 57 on it, but it fits my 58,5 size hat perfectly. Lucky me. The felt is so soft and reminds me of chamois. Maybe it is, i don't know. I think it's a rare find.

That is a really nice find, Marcel.

I particularly like the liner and look of the finish. It certainly could be chamois.

Marcel, Super find! That is an older Collins Wien Soft Felt. It does appears to have a Chamois Finish. Really great form! Looks to be possibly later 1950s. Collins Wien was primarily a multi location retail operation that also made hats (when Habig closed in the 1980s Collins Wien acquired some their equipment / blocks / flanges, ect). Would it be possible to take an entire photo of the paper label?

Here is a Collins Wien "Luxus" "Prima Smoking Hat" with a similar paper label.

I found a Rousselet Ulm (from Ruf) in the Deutsche Hutmacher Zeitung December 15, 1936 edition.

55554574295_b777b3cb0e_z.jpg

THE BRAND HAT FROM RUF:

Rousselet Ulm

It sells well.

Exclusive distributor: RAPPOLT & SONS HAMBURG 1

3a. 169476. R. 14907.

RAPPOLT & SONS

16/3 1912. Rappolt & Sons, Hamburg. 13/1 1913.

Warenzeichenblatt, Volume 20, 1913

Business: Manufacture and sale of hats and other headgear. Goods: Hats and other headgear, hat leather, linings, ribbons. [13.18]

I came across a mention of Rousselet Ulm "from Ruf" and Resolut Hutfabrik G.m.b.H. / L. F. Rousselet Friedricksdorf in The Hatter's Gazette Vol. 71, 1947 edition.

I already knew that Resolut Hutfabrik took over L. F. Rousselet Friedricksdorf (near Bad Homburg) in 1934 but the second Rousselet Ulm "from Ruf" (according to The Hatter's Gazette Vol. 71, 1947 edition didn't survive WWII) is a new twist. I will have to see if I can find out anything about Rousselet Ulm "from Ruf".

Hückel & Co. Bendlgasse 16. Wien. 1946 - 1966, A. Jaks & Co. Bendlgasse 16. Wien. 1967 - 1969

Hugo Augustin Hückel (a nephew of the Hückel firm's head) in 1946, partnered with two major entities to form a consortium known as Hückel & Co. in Vienna. Hückel & Co. took over the Sindermann Velour and Felt Hat-Body Factory at Benglgasse 16. Vienna. Sindermann Velour and Felt Hat-Body Factory were a very well respected Felt manufacturer (supplied P. & C. Habig Wien, Berlin). I found from the Wien Amtliches Telephone Books that Hückel & Co. ownership changed to A. Jaks in 1966 and became known as A. Jaks & Co. in 1967. A. Jaks & Co. was last listed in 1968 / 1969.
