Hello Mayserwegener,

thank you for the pictures! I do not think, one can find that great reference, over here, in Germany!

I like the light gray Hückel and the Habig Bowler, in particular. Great hats, altogether!

Does anyone know where to get good loden hats from? I'm not referring to some moderately priced average quality hat you can find in most skiing regions for tourists, but I mean loden as would have been made specifically to be worn in nasty weather and hold up. The only type of wool felt capable of equalling fur felt in durability.

I'd like to have a good loden hat for outdoor use and I wonder if they are still being manufactured by a German or Austrian hatmaker, preferably actually made in Germany or Austria as I don't really want something which is made in China. I'm not too keen on vintage either, as they are probably fantastic but too hard to find. I'd rather just have a well made modern loden hat which I don't have to search ebay and classifieds for until I find it after months of waiting.

I am think late 1970s early 1980s but in mint condition. Style wise it is very similar to a 1940 Habig Homburg I have at Optimo for repair.

My choices would be Zapf (made in Austria/Hungary) and HutKoenig Regensburg (Germany). Most of their hats are fur felts although some are wool. Zapf might ship to you but they only accept bank transfers and online options are limited. HutKoenig Regensburg doesn't do any online business. Faustmann is another option but they also require a bank transfer.

I am sure Dreispitz will have some additional information to add.

There is not much to add:

here is the page of Frankonia: https://www.frankonia.de/shop/Jagdhut/_/bid/237056/cpage/11/productdetail.html

They have a nice selection ot loden hats.

While hunting around for information on Hutfabrik A. Peshel I ran into this interesting article on Hückel (now TONAK) which also mentions Hutfabrik A. Peshel. I am not sure what happened to Hutfabrik A. Peshel after WWII. My guess is it got absorbed into the Czech-Slovak state controlled TONAK. Neutitschein (now Novy Jicin) was pat of the Austrian Hungarian Empire up to WWI.

The reference on the radio.cz page mentions Peschel as one of the two other industrial scale producers of Novy Jicin next to Hückel. It is said, they all catered hats throughout the Austrian Empire and internationally. Due to the tough competititors the quality must have been good. Yes, what remained after the war in the Czech part was collectivated into TONAK.

Peschel also had a production site in Dinkelsbühl near Augsburg, Germany. The place had been turned into an air-force school after hat production stopped (no record found on the exact year) and was demolished in the 1980ies.

Mayserwegener asked me to post some of my recent ebay purchases here.
I'll start off with a Peschel 7" I won for 23,83 €. It's a very soft felt quality in carcoal grey. Came with a trolley attached to it. A few stains on the liner. I tried to find some information on Peschel, but couldn't come up with any results.

A 7" Mayser in grey. Bought for a mere 1 € (ok, shipping fees excluded...). No idea about it's age. Hat auctions on ebay Germany almost never provide any useful information; they also tend to list wrong sizes a lot. Never mind. The liner says it was made for Huthaus Lauer, Koblenz-Entenpfuhl (founded 1857).
