German & Austrian Hutmachers

Hückel velour in grey, made for Sools, Paris. Size 56 with the raw edge brim at 5,5cm and the crown at 10cm at the center dent. This was a bit of a close call as the shipping company neglected to send me a notification of its arrival at the pick-up point. The seller did point out to me that it had been delivered there and indeed it was. This hat has been worn and loved and alas also got some unwanted attention from moths, as there is some light surface mothing on the brim and crown.
Perfectly wearable hat though and an added bonus it that it has a date on it: as far as I can make out (it's close to impossible to photograph) it says 29 sept 1936. Seems about right to me. It's a pre-war Hückel velour, that is already enough to tell you something about the felt.

Maybe this should technically be in the Czech thead, but I expect to see the Hückels here.

Stefan, Super find! It's great to see a lighter color Velour is such good condition. I don't believe I have seen that JHS Sweatband mark before.

I consider JHS as a Austrian / German because they kept the Wien connection post WWI. They also built a factory in Ratibor, Silesia, Germany (1925) to get around the Czechoslovakian export restrictions to Germany and Austria (their major customer base). This is a receipt from 1930 which lists the factories plus the Wien / Vienna.

Brüder Böhm had their Wien / Vienna factory and that remained their headquarters post WWI. Anton Peschel Neutitschein had a very tough time because they couldn't export to Austria and Germany because their only factory was in Neutitschein / Nový Jičín.

Miesbacher Velourhutfabrik, Otto Koch, Koch Velour "Extra", 58 cm possible late 1950s. I was interested in this hat because I don't have an example of Miesbacher Velourhutfabrik, Otto Koch, Koch Velour. I am not sure if Miesbacher Velourhutfabrik is related to Ernst Kohlndorfer Miesbach / Oberbayren Velour Hutfabrik so I will have to do some research. The closed cropped Velour is of excellent quality (color, finish, hand) and is in very good condition. This is a typical Miesbacher Trachten style and the overall quality is superb.

Bristol / Anton Peschel Dinkelsbühl "Excellent" "Bella", 58 cm later 1960s. This hat came Open Crown so unusual for a later German made hat. The Felt has a really fine color and finish and easily dry creases. The Curled Brim has a bit less Flange than a Homburg and the Brim Binding is thinner so maybe a less formal Homburg. I don't think it would be considered a Camber type but is somewhat similar. Whatever it is it looks great especially considering the time period. Also some mysteries solved! (see below).

I am not sure why I missed this but the "Bella" mark was used by Anton Peschel Dinkelsbühl so the "Bristol" and "Diplomat" marks were made by Anton Peschel Dinkelsbühl. The paper label formats are similar and so are the components and construction. Also the German "Windsor" mark was made by Anton Peschel Dinkelsbühl!

Well, I can't say it's either my style or my colour of choice, but I can appreciate a well made velour when I see one. And this one certainly is a quality piece. Nice find, Steve.
