Gärner Hüte Wien "Record" Manufactured by J. Heinr. Ita Wien, 59cm, Real Fur Felt probably 1930s or 1940s. I assume Gärner Hüte Wien is the same as Gärner Wien who also made their own hats. I have an earlier Gärner Wien Wool Stiff Felt. The paper label has a "U.F." which doesn't point to J. Heinr. Ita Wien so could be a Gärner Hüte Wien label. I couldn't find any company that matches those initials. The "F" could be Fabrik (Factory) but no guess yet regarding the "U". I really like form of this one and also the ribbon with + bow design.

59cm is usually U.S. 7 3/8 but some hats can run smaller or larger. It's best to ask inside center front to back measurement. Also center side to side if you have a more circular head. When dealing with European sellers you need to use cm measurements.

Got it! Thanks for the response! Upon seeking the Mayser, I asked for the U.S. size equivalent. I too also ask for inside measurements when seeking vintage pieces as most U.S. sizes (especially vintage pieces) can vary!

That's always good news. Can't wait to see them. In the meantime here's one I haven't posted before. Nothing super special but a very nice example of German craftsmanship. Echter Breiter (der Hutmacher am Dom) of München/Munich in brown. Size 56 with quite wide brim binding (not that common in my expercience). Brim at 6,5cm and crow 10,5cm at the pinch. Lovely liner. All in all a very nice hat I don't wear often enough. Need two posts for it.

Karl, Mike, Steve, thanks. The label and the "imprägnol" tag are the same as on the Windsor branded hats I own. Don't know who the maker is of that brand either. So that doesn't get us any further. Windsor was a cheaper brand in general though.

Stefan, Did you post photos of this Windsor? I have never been able to find the owner of the Windsor trademark. My Windsor (see link below) has a different paper label but of course no company mark. I tend to think the trademark was owned by a distributor like F. W. Schneider Köln.

Steve, I thought I did but after checking it appears I have not posted both Windsor hats I have. Here's the first one (of which the label is seen above). Windsor fedora in grey. Size 55 with and overwell brim at 5,5 cm and the crown at 9,5 cm. Unlined with a cloth crown patch. From the adverts I found recently it seems Windsor was a hat in lower price range. This one has some moth damage, but the real reason it sits at the back is because it doesn't fit me. Funny thing is that the shop's imprint on the sweat actually has a spelling mistake: Het Nueuwste should be Het Nieuwste.

Here's the other Windsor I have. Windsor homburg size 56 in grey with a bound brim at 5,5cm and crown at 10cm. No other label in the hat than the one pictured here.

Karl, thanks. You're right: they are fine hats, just not as refined as some of the higher end hats. Considering they were half the price of a Borsalino back in the day I think it's safe to say they were popular hats.

Steve, they were on my "to do" list. The comparison to Wegener is one I made for myself too. Maybe they were the maker? I do have another hat of the same maker that's branded "Manhattan". I'll post that one next.

If only for reference. Here's another hat that has the same label as the Windsor and Breiter hats. Haven't posted it before because it's not much to look at in its current state. The brim binding was all but gone, the sweatband had seen (much) better days and the ribbon was beyond saving as well. Anyway: Manhattan fedora in grey. Size 57. Brim 6,5cm and crown 10cm at the pinch. The form is nice, but the felt is rather stiff (like the windsor fedora) and feels a bit more rough to the touch. I did use it as a testing hat for making a bow myself.
