Mayser "Spezial?", measures 58cm, probably early to mid 1950s. Unique thin ribbon / bow combination. Sold by Wilhelm Zeumer (80 years) of Karlsruhe. Couldn't find a paper label but could be a "Spezial".

An Ebay buy that went from a dog to a gem. I received a 7 1/4 Mayser that was actually much larger than my normal 58cm size. The inside tag reads weite 60. Google Translator says it means wide, but I suspect it actually means this is a 60cm size (or brim width? 60mm).

The hat was very dusty, almost gritty and the felt seemed like cheap cardboard and the sweatband was crispy and tore easily. I tossed it aside and chalked it up to the cost of my education.

A week or so later, I revisited that hat to see what I might salvage. I vacuumed, lint rolled and brushed the felt. I noticed then that this was actually a thin dense felt with a nice hand. Maybe there was hope.

I gave it a quick steam, noticing that the felt was easily shaped, and all traces of the old creasing were eliminated. The hat weighed ~ 3.5 ounces. I thought this might actually make a nice lightweight hat. So I went to work.

A bit of sizing tape was all it took make the fit acceptable. I removed and washed the liner and repaired the splits in the thin leather sweat band with Pliobond. Unfortunately the clear liner on the liner disintegrated after soaking. Perhaps it was some type of cellulose film and not plastic.

I bashed it to my liking and now I have a lightweight hat that I enjoy wearing.
