Anyone else like these trousers as much as I do? I recently picked up a pair for $13 at Wal-Mart and I love how they look. Very little taper, wide cuffs, pleats, classic patterns and nice drape.

Hey, everybody. :) Back after a long absence!

thunderw21: I don't know... I saw some at Wal-Mart myself last week. I was really impressed with the selection of colors, patterns, and styles, but I couldn't help noticing that there wasn't a single natural fiber in the bunch... mostly polyester, mixed in with some rayon and acetate. I was beginning to wonder if all the sheep and cotton plants had died out and nobody had told me! lol

I was impressed by the look of 'em, though. Are they at least comfortable and somewhat breathable? I might just go ahead and nab some next week anyway.

Cheers,
-Tofu

Hey Admiral, welcome back.
Two of my complaints about these trousers are, as you pointed out, they are made of man-made fibers and the lack of trouser buttons (easily fixed).

One pair I got a year ago is 65% polyester and 35% rayon. This pair is very soft and drapes well. It almost feels like cotton and the weave is herringbone. Very comfortable, breathable and probably my favorite pair of trousers.

The trousers I got recently are 80% polyester and 20% rayon, so they're different from the trousers I posted above. I don't know if they changed it to 80/20 for every pair or just a few. You can tell it's made of man-made fibers: it's smoother and not quite as soft as my earlier trousers but still comfortable. I haven't had a chance to wear them a lot yet but they seem to drape well. Again, comfortable and seemingly breathable.

Thanks; it's good to be back. :)

Most of the pants I saw that day last week were 65/35; the rest were 80/20, 86/14 poly/acetate, and 100% polyester. Of course, this was my local Wal-Mart... YMMV.

That they're comfortable, though, is wonderful news to hear.

I'm glad to see that most are still the 65/35. The 80/20 aren't bad but I couldn't wear something that was 100%. It just goes against my convictions...

But in all seriousness, I just outfitted both of my George trousers with suspender buttons and they drape great.

I hear you about the 100% polyester. I have three pairs of David Taylor 100% polyester trousers. One of them isn't so bad, and I wear it often, but the other two feel like I'm wearing plastic...which technically I am. lol I bought them about a year ago, when I had first decided I wanted to dress more nicely, but had no idea what I was doing.

Glad the Georges are working out so nicely, though, especially with suspender buttons (that's the one thing I'll say about my plastic pants -- they've taken to suspenders well). Are photos a possibility? :)

Unfortunately no. My archives are strangely devoid of pics of them and I don't have a camera with me. Perhaps at Thanksgiving.

I'm going to resurrect this thread.

I just wrote a quick evaluation of two pairs of George brand trousers that I bought at Wal-Mart for $15-$20. Here are some pictures and parts of that evaluation from www.mrlapel.blogspot.com.

The picture below shows three pairs of trousers. One pair is from the late-1940s while the other two are modern George brand trousers. Can you pick out the vintage pair?
GeorgeTrousercomparison.jpg

You might have decided that the pair on the left is the vintage pair and you would be right, but you probably had some trouble coming to that conclusion. As you can see, like trousers from the 1930s through the early 1950s, the two George trousers have very little taper to them.

The vintage trou is beneath the modern:

Note that they are the same width.

As you can see, both of my George trousers have cuffs...Both pairs of trousers have cuffs that measure 1 1/2" in length, falling in at the very bottom of the vintage cuff length of 1 1/2" to 2". These cuffs are perfect."

The George Brand

I read somewhere that the George brand is very big in Europe, and even somewhat pricey over there. The article I read was more on how Wal-mart was having trouble moving the George products, and selling them at a very low price to get them out the door!:eusa_clap

Thanks for the info. No wonder they were on clearance, no one over here has any good taste! :p
Do you remember where the article was from?

Nice. Where does the waist sit?

Does Walmart still carry this brand?

It really depends upon the trousers, though they are higher waisted than most.
While both of my pairs are 32x32, the grayish pair pictured above is a tad higher-waisted than the olive pair. The gray pair sits at or even slightly above my navel while the olive pair sits at or slightly below (with suspenders).

Here's another pic of the olive pair worn with suspenders.

From what I've seen lately Wal-Mart does not carry George anymore. They were there two months ago on clearance so it looks like they might have gotten rid of George brand for good, though my word's not gospel.

I see you're wearing button-type suspenders/braces with them. Do they come prepped for them, or did you have to add the buttons? They appear to have belt loops also.

The George brand is sold in the UK through the Asda chain. I'm instinctively wary of polyester - for non-suit trousers I'd definitely prefer a cotton I can wash.... I do have a pair of 100% poly Farah slacks somewhere. Hardwearing, but there's just something..... not quite right with them. Hard to explain, quite probably purely psychological. What really makes me wary though of such cheap clothing is the concern about the conditions it is produced under. With goods that cheap, is it really possible for the manufacturer to get a fair deal?

WalMart, of course, owns Asda. The George brand is seen as very 'downmarket' clothing here (as you might expect seeing where its sold).

You have to add the buttons yourself and they do have belt loops.

I checked out my local Wal Mart for George trousers today. All they had left were solids (blue, black, khaki). I was hoping to find some of those nice plaids that thunderw21 posted but, alas, none in my size. Looks like they are closing them out.
