Tell Gary, "Hello!" from Buzz. I just sent him two more felts to revive from their near-death experiences and he has a new fedora and two cleaned hats on their way to me right now. I own...what?...five hats made by Gary. I am a fan, in a big, BIG way. Gary's web site seems dead, but he is very good about telephone calls and has always been thoroughly reliable in every transaction I've had with him.

I never lived in Cincy but I did order hats from Gus Miller. Mr. Miller makes a hat that has the Aura of a hat from the Golden Era that I have never seen any hatter be able to reproduce. The only modern hats that you would swear were no later than the early 50's.
In terms of skill, quality, customer service, technique, felt, and quality control the winner is Mr White by far.
Optimo and Art do a great Job too and are both terrific.
No one is more fun to talk about hats with than Mr. Gary White.
This might be a bit candid but the three times I sent my fedoras to Optimo they did a great job renovating my hats...... but the Miracles Mr White fixed were super-human and his skills, well I have not seen any hatter come close in renovating a hat.
Every Time I ordered a hat from Gus and told him to put it in teardrop it came in a center crease but when I fixed it, no hat suited me personally better than Gus Millers hats.

Hmm… this could be very interesting to know. I presume you have been a customer of all 3 hatters above mentioned? I had the pleasure of working with all 3 of them so it will be good to compare and learn something perhaps I have missed all these years.
I will touch each of your points separately
Skill / Technique
What makes you think Gary White’s skill is far better than Optimo or Art? What is he capable of doing that Graham and Art cannot? Any particular details you care to mention that help bring out this point will be very helpful. Are you defining skill as the ability to make different kinds of hats or skill in executing a certain specific style better than others? I find it Very difficult to believe that Graham is less talented in this sheer ability to make different types of hats. Art is more specific but again doesn’t mean he is less talented just more honed in to make a certain type of product better.
So where in terms of skill and technique do you feel Graham and Art are lacking?
Quality / Felt / Quality control
Okay this tie in with Skill but I will be more specific as to the “materials” used for making a hat and the way in which the hat is “put together” or “make”. Art uses Winchester and I believe so does Gary (somebody correct me if he uses different felts now) both by default offer beaver. Optimo uses Fepsa, which can be beaver nutria blend or pure beaver also. In my opinion and of many hatters / industry people fepsa makes probably the finest felts in the world and certainly denser than Winchester. Arts ribbons are every bit as good as Gary’s in my opinion and Optimo’s ribbon work is a category of its own.
Why do you feel Gary White hats are superior in quality than Art or Optimo’s? Again what is missing in those two that is present in Gary’s hats?
That one is very subjective and obviously not entirely fair to discuss
With respect to price Optimo is much more expensive than Gary who is more expensive than Art. Value wise Art’s hats are up there I would say but that is rather subjective therefore I will leave it out.
So to reiterate, I have used all 3 of these hatters for custom hats (along with many others) and I am sincerely interested in hearing about this. Maybe you will help me appreciate my Gary White hat more than I have in past and notice things I never saw before.

What I said was not said eloquently. I was not comparing Mr Whites skill, technique, quality, or customer service in making and producing a hat to Optimo or Art, just Mr. Gus Miller. Optimo, Art, And Mr White all are really great hatters and produce some of the greatest hats today. Mr. White lets me talk to him the most about hats and has given me the most information any hatter has, so I find him the most exciting to talk to.
In terms of making great fedoras Optimo, Art, and Mr White are all in the same range and are very CONSISTENT in making what you order.
With Gus, their is no consistency in the hats I ordered but they seemed to suit me personally the best once I personalize them be creasing them differently.
Now every hatter I mentioned, Mr White, Art, Optimo, Mr. Miller are all Hatters I have been very impressed with all the hats I have ordered and would suggest anybody to buy hats from these wonderful hatters.

In terms of renovating a hat, I have personally never seen a hatter make miracles happen that I thought were impossible to fix like Mr White fixed. That is only my personal experience.

You mentioned speaking to Mr. White about hats. I live in the Buffalo area and have been to Mr. White's store several times, having had two hats made in one year from him. I went in to order my hat, and stood there talking with him for over two hours!! The man is amazing!!!
He also made the hat for Leo DiCaprio in "Revolutionary Road". I just saw the movie two weeks ago. I actually didn't like the film at all, but there was a scene when Leo takes his hat off in his place of business, and I could see the familiar black and gold lining that Gary uses in his hats... made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
