This is a very substantial and beautifully made vintage coat, tailored in England during the 1950s using genuine Crombie Elysian Cloth. The cloth is exceptionally heavy and dense, and the complete coat weighs approximately 3.8 kg, giving it that wonderfully substantial feel that is becoming increasingly difficult to find in modern outerwear.
It features a classic double-******ed front with a full belt and large Ulster collar, giving it the distinctive character of a traditional mid-century British overcoat.
The Elysian Cloth is what really makes this coat special. It is a very heavy, densely brushed wool cloth known for its excellent warmth and protection from cold and wind. At approximately 3.8 kg, this is an exceptionally substantial overcoat. Modern coats are generally nowhere near this weight, and finding a vintage coat made from such a heavy and substantial Elysian cloth is becoming increasingly difficult. Reproducing this type of coat today would also be a very expensive proposition, considering the amount and quality of wool, as well as the tailoring involved.
The colour is a dark grey/charcoal, which works very well with the classic design and gives the coat a timeless appearance.
The coat has no marked size, as it was hand-made by a tailor, so please rely on the measurements rather than a standard size. It is a very generously cut coat.
Dimensions (approx.):
Chest (armpit to armpit): 70 cm
Length (under collar seam to hem): 120 cm
Sleeve (shoulder seam to cuff): 69 cm
Shoulders (seam to seam): 59–60 cm
Considering that this coat is around 70 years old, it remains in very good overall condition. There is one small rip in the inside lining, which should be straightforward for a tailor to repair. The outer wool cloth itself is in good condition, with no holes, moth damage or missing areas of wool that I have found. Please refer to the photos for the exact condition.
The coat has always been stored carefully in a dry, dark place, away from direct sunlight, damp and moths.
Please look carefully at all photos, as they form part of the description. This is an original vintage garment and naturally shows some signs of age and previous use.
A particularly interesting piece for anyone interested in vintage British tailoring, Crombie, heavyweight wool overcoats and traditional mid-century outerwear. The combination of the bespoke construction, Ulster collar, belted double-******ed design and exceptionally heavy Elysian Cloth makes this a rather unusual coat.
I am asking €250 FOR FORUM MEMBERS!, which I believe is a fair price for such a rare and substantial vintage Crombie coat, particularly given the exceptional weight and genuine Elysian Cloth. A comparable coat made to this standard today would be a very expensive piece, easily reaching €1,000 or more, depending on the cloth and tailoring.
Shipping: I can ship worldwide, including throughout the EU. Shipping costs are paid by the buyer and will depend on the destination. Please contact me with your country if you would like a shipping quote.
