I tend to wear solid pocket squares that nearly match the color of my shirt. Except for the white/white combo, I haven't seen many men do this.
I think this is a great idea. I've slowly been collecting solid squares in various colors, to go with various shirts and ties and jackets. With some outfits, it seems I'd rather have a square to match the tie than to match the shirt--depending on which wants more support, I guess. I do tend to like what I consider "fruity" colors for pocket squares, pink, lavender, etc. The pocket square, done in one's own personal style, combined or contrasted with a given shirt and tie or jacket, really makes one's attire appear personalized and unique, rather than just like something you might have taken off a hanger for the first time only moments ago....

How about matching shirt and tie? I saw this on one of the old episodes of Benny Hill. He had several different patterns.

Benny used to do a lot of paisley/paisley, and you're right. They were the same pattern. Thought that was his schtick till I got the DVD set of the 60s Brit show Department S. Perhaps it was a minor fad?

I remember that thread. Certainly a memorable style. Almost seems like a pink square would be a natural with that get-up. What a huge knot in the tie! What kind of a knot must that be to be so large?

Pink on pink. Now that is scary. I think it was a fad but definitely not in this country as far as I can remember. Benny is the only one I know who used to wear the ghastly things. :p Considering he started his show in the UK in 1955 and his show didn't get her until the 1970s, I think that was probably pretty popular until well into the 1970s. It figures I guess. :eusa_doh:

It used to be Detroit....
Reminds me of this fella wearing a red and black plaid shirt with a matching tie (completely indistinguishable from the shirt) and a matching cap! now that's scary. It think it was Earl Sinclair in Dinosaurs.
