Freewheelers Jacket #5 San Mateo

As some might know, @Carlos840 got a Freewheelers San Mateo jacket that did not quite fit him correctly. This is a model from Freewheelers that I did not love at first, sort of like the Mullholland. In fact, I know there is a comment I made on this very forum a few years back saying that this jacket was not for me.

It obviously grew on me. Part of the reason I did not think it was for me was the fact that this jacket is a bit extreme in my opinion. It is quite unique. The mandarin collar that moves into absolutely gargantuan lapels is the big feature. Certainly, this jacket has never heard the word 'subtle.'

I wanted to buy this from Carlos as soon as I saw him listing it for sale, but it was not in the cards at the time. Fast forward to mid-February of this year with some clothing sold and 35 pounds off my frame, I was ready for this jacket. It had never left my mind and I had wanted it more and more. My confidence in being able to pull off a jacket like this grew as I got smaller.

If you have seen Carlos' pictures, I think you would agree that it looked better on him than it does on me. With that said, I do think this jacket fits me extremely well. The best part is that the sleeves are not too bad. They are a little too long, but with the zippers done up all the way, I think they look perfectly fine. It fits brilliantly everywhere else and feels quite comfortable to wear both unzipped and zipped.

Because of the unique front design of the jacket, I think this is the first jacket that I have ever owned that I prefer zipped up to unzipped. It looks good unzipped, but I think it really shines when zipped up.

The construction is unsurprisingly flawless. Freewheelers' stitching is dense and neat to a degree that truly impresses. There are some other little details that are great too such as the nice linings (I really like the black and blue plaid lining in the sleeves), the laces on the sides, and the tan leather on the inside of the jacket. The leather is rude black which is grey on the inside. This will be interesting to see age. I know technically have 5 different leathers because my Mulholland is vintage black which is a classic style tea core with brown underneath. I adore Shinki leather and this is another fine example of it.

Time for some photos! I apologize for the pictures being overexposed, but I'm trying to show off the jacket here so I figured that would be best. Also, I am just going to re-use a couple of Carlos' photos for the jacket by itself because I am concentrating more on the fit on me.

Looks really badass! Fit is good too imho. Now you just need one of those old rusty Harley that the Freewheelers owner seems to enjoy riding!

Dude, that's aperfect fit. It really works on your body shape much better than it did on me IMO.
I agree with you that it looks cleaner when closed, but it is definitely wearable both ways.
Maybe once broken in and softened it will hang better open? I really wore it very little and it still needs to soften.
I'm jealous...

Another fine example on how our tastes evolve in this hobby, I love it when members here try something new and enjoy it in the end! :D

And it certainly looks good open as well

Now if we could only get @Superfluous to get a cross-zip...

Beautiful fit dude. Can’t be improved upon. While I don’t care for some of the design elements personally, there is no arguing against a fit like that. This jacket s best paired with days you feel like a true rock and roll mother....you know. Well done!

Haha I think I will stick with cars for now :D

Thanks Carlos! I wore it with a white t shirt today and I liked it open much more. You are almost certainly right and it will look better once broken in further.

I have to say that I think that is your best looking jacket on you...especially when zipped.

Thanks! I agree that zipped up, this is my best fitting jacket now.

A really nice jacket that fits you perfectly and a great addition to your superb collection, congratulations!

Thanks! I am quite happy with it, especially with the fit.

Thanks very much. It is certainly unique. I am definitely most happy with the fit.

fit perfect zipped, congrats
have you tried not anchoring the collar so it rest / roll naturally.

I have not tried that yet. I am quite happy with it how it is now.

Congrats. Unlike you, I fell for the San Mateo the first time I saw it so naturally it became my first FW leather jacket.

I can see why now! I was just a little late to the party

As good a fit as you will see on FL.

Thanks! I really appreciate that

Well done.

That is very much called "WINNING!"

Thanks! I appreciate it.

^^^ I agree. Fit is spot on.

Thanks! I am thrilled with the fit.

I'd get one next time I'm in Japan...
I'm a sucker for "loud"

I’m fact, I’m probably going after a Centinela

The Centinela is awesome. I think it's still a bit much for me now... but I could love it in a few years.

I took some photos of this jacket with a white t shirt and in my opinion, it looks much better, especially unzipped!

Man, I need this jacket in size 44, no jokes. The most badass jacket I've ever seen. If anybody would like to sell such FW in size 44 - send me an offer via PM please.
P.S. Dude, to my taste it's the best FW from all your 5. Yes, it fits you and looks on you even better than that gorgeous brown Caboose. And yes, it talks when zipped. The best.
