Formal hair question

Hello. I intro'd myself on another thread but I am a new gal and I am needing to glean your collective expertise, please.

I have recently became completely in love with vintage hairstyles. I am attending a military ball next week and would really love to do a triple roll in my hair and I have done and re-done it a million times practicing the past few weeks.

My problem is that I just can't seem to get the sides tight and its so frustrating!:rage: The top always looks so good but the sides look more like A Flock of Seagulls and less like 40s Glam. LOL

Any suggestions? I cannot find a stylist in my area who has an experience with the style so I am going at it alone! :eusa_doh:

Thanks, girls! I appreciate the help. I don't have a livejournal account and I am sorry I put this in the wrong forum. Oops.:eusa_doh:

Thank you for moving this. I didn't even see the beauty forum. Lots of great info.

*Sidenote, I am NOT as dense as I appear. Way to start off running! Oy.

You can still browse without having an account. They also have some archived pdf's of vintage hair styling manuals.

Good Luck!

My waist length hair is a bear to manipulate into vintage styles, but I try what I learned there and I am getting the hang of it!

Please post pics of what you've accomplished so far, and maybe a pic of exactly what you want!

Ditto! And welcome to the lounge! I'm sure there are some triple roll pics throughout the 'show us your hairdo' thread, but you'll have to fish for them...

Are you teasing your hair? I think one of the main tricks with triples is making two of the rolls touch, and then putting a flower or whatever in the area that is more open.

Welcome to the lounge Misty!

Try using hair rats.

I ended up having it done professionally and the girl made it look TERRIBLE! I took her pictures, walked her though it, everything. I was just too nervous to do it myself. Oh well, I will do it myself next year for sure.

She made me look like Maleficent

I would deffinitly try using hair rats! and you don't have to leave them in.. you can spray your hair down and take out the rat and just bobby pin your hair so it stays.. this is a pretty easy way to do them!

You can also make your own hair rats! I know theres some posts in here about it but I can't quite remember where it is exactly :eusa_doh: but you can buy hair rats here

I'm sure you can cut them down and do different things aswell if you experiment a little bit.. good luck :)

I'm totally with you...the sides are the hardest. My hairdresser here in LA makes it look so easy. I'm getting my hair done on Saturday (can't wait!!...he's doing this new "shine conditioning" to my hair..ooh la la...and planning on doing some sort of rita hayworth style)...and I will ask him for pointers on how to do the sides and let you know. I know it's too late since you've had your shindig, but I'm sure there will be another time that you will want the rolls.

I figured out a way to do it better. I stole a rat tail comb out of my husbands medicine cabinet. I am not sure why he had it but it is mine now. I roll the hair around the rat tail end and I start toward the middle of the hair instead of the end because its too long.

This was the hair in the bathroom of the hotel room at the Ball.

I made the best of it. There wasn't enough time to redo it. I will certainly do it myself next year. You can see the back in the mirror. Not vintage. My husband thought it was okay so I guess that is all I can hope for.

I think it looks great! The only thing non-vintage about it is the way the hair left down is. I really like it! oh and Rat-tail combs are a MUST. Especially when rolling on curlers... if ends are popping out, use the tail to sweep them back in. Works like a charm every time! * Beauty school trick!*

I know exactly how you feel, a few yrs back I decided to have it done for me.
She made me look like a cross between Marge Simpsons sisters and like you say, Gary Oldman as Dracula!!!
Much better to practise at home, but you still look Gorrrrgeous!!!
