For Queen and First Lady, Bush Will Try White Tie

How do they keep coming up with these pictures?

Phil the Greek's looking at something mildly amusing - perhaps an Indian electrician just walked into the room, or maybe a chinese student. Betty is wondering if she left the oven on when she shut the front door, the black dude is mid-way through an epiphany, GW may be conscious, and Laura B. seems to have smell'd something quite nasty (though, on second glance, maybe she's just chewing a wasp).

Well, she just gets bored when Chuck's not around to goose things up.

Have you ever noticed that at Presidential appearances everyone has a little lapel pin? A friend of mine who works with the White House on events like this clued me in when President Bush came to Blacksburg last month. It's part of the security protocols, and the Secret Service looks as much at the pin than the person wearing it. I don't see why the President should have to wear one, (I hope the Secret Service knows who he is!) but I would presume that is part of the protocol as well.

As for the rest, as I said before, there are people on the White House staff whose job is to make sure the President is appropriately dressed for the occasion. They should have made sure his waistcoat, trousers, tails, etc, were all properly fitted. They had several weeks to do so, while this visit was being planned. Changes in his body shape, even over four years, are irrelevant, because there was plenty of time to have things adjusted. They failed to have this done. Unless President Bush overrode their decisions, these people should be fired. Of all the things one may choose to criticize him for, the quality (as opposed to the style) of his clothing should not be one of them.

The BBC reporter described Mr Bush as looking like a schoolboy on his first day at school, wearing a uniform that didn't fit [huh]
The report also went onto say that he hadn't worn 'white tie' since 2003 and his body shape had possibly changed since then (though it doesn't excuse the waist coat faux pas [huh] ).

Also wearing of little badges (like the flag badge) is just out of order, (military decorations would be different, as in HRH Prince Philip, or HM) and of all the people who need to show his allegiance/country, he is the least needing to, his very position shows it clearly enough!

I don't know who from the Whitehouse advises/trains in Royal protocol, but I noticed on the news report, First Lady, Mrs Bush reaching over to Prince Philip to take his hand or sleeve, and he moved out of her reach.
She was probably doing it in a really friendly/homely fashion, but the Whitehouse advisors should have briefed them on 'touching' the Royals. It just isn't done [huh] Different rules I guess.

GOOD POINTS: First Lady looks stunning!!:eusa_clap and showed that she was really making an effort, and looked very 'at ease' with such a high profile occasion/visit.

Mr President: He actually made a BIG EFFORT to dress up and ditched the cowboy boots for the patent leather shoes :eusa_clap
Also, although he didn't look comfortable (he was out of his comfort zone), ...he had the guts to bite the bullet, tried to put on a brave face and did his bit, so well done Mr President (we all do things we don't really want to at times, some run, some don't ...you stood your ground). :eusa_clap

And the WHOLE EVENT is full of Olde World charm :) It's like going back to the days of Roosevelt (either of them) or Eisenhower. Let's hear it for good old fashioned events like this one!!!

But please Sir, get the 'white tie' sorted :)

I often wonder, as President, is it improper to refer to him as "Mr. Bush"? You see it often in the media (CS magazine included  ) where he is referred to as mister while other dignitaries are allowed their title. Prime Minister Blair isn't referred to as "Mr. Blair," etc.

BBC refers to the PM as "Mr. Blair" and the Prez as "Mr. Bush" (it's their style and they're at least consistent with it), while our MSM always refer to "Mr. Bush" vs. "President Clinton". (The latter being a pet peeve, both over the nastiness of modern politics and as an ex-journalist who prides himself on his integrity.)

I believe the journalistic standard is to refer to him as President Bush in the first citation, then Mr. Bush in subsequent citations. I learned that from The NY Times ombudsman.

You are most likely correct, and I have edited my post to reflect this.

The wink is, apparently, the real deal according to the Globe and Mail.

* Note, this article is slightly different then the print version, which stated after Bush made the quip about the 'look a child would give a mother', he winked at the queen.

I've also heard that the King and Queen find the protocol quite amusing; particularily the tiny details try to get right.

Cheers

Here's a closer shot.

74094839.jpg

Good Lord, he's wearing a turndown collar.

74094845.jpg

Can you say, "ill-at-ease?"

74094801.jpg

Here's one accessory, at least, that looks good.

74094756.jpg

Notice the contrast between the two men's tail suits: Prince Philip's jacket, waistcoat, and trousers are all much higher-cut, lending him an elegant and comfortable air. The President looks like he's wearing a diaper under his trousers because they're so low on his hips, his waistcoat is too long, and his tails are at least a couple of inches too short. He looks uncomfortable, and he probably is. Anyone would be uncomfortable if he were put in a suit as ill-fitting as that.

I'm glad, in theory, that white-tie has reappeared at the White House. But seeing how poorly it's carried off, it makes me wonder whether it really is a good thing.

Is there a reason none of these links work, or is it just me?

Imagine if "Dubya" had taken some in the FL's advice and worn a topper, as well. This get-up was a knee-slapper as it was, but adding a top hat would have made an organ-grinder's monkey look debonair by comparison. Oh...and a cane. Next time, Mr. President, carry a cane, too.
