I grew up in Ottawa, and after moving to Toronto what I miss most are:

poutine4.jpg

poutine!! it seems no one outside of quebec/the ottawa valley can do it right. here in toronto they screw it up with beef gravy, shredded cheese, goat cheese, crappy fries, etc etc etc. What is so hard about handcut fries, fresh cheese curds, and chicken gravy??

and beavertails. i have heard there is a beavertails stand here but have yet to find it (for those who don't know, a beavertail is a fried dough covered in sugar with lemon juice)

Naturally, Ohio is the only place I've had buckeyes. They can be bought almost anywhere, but taste far better when made with your favorite peanut butter and a chocolate.

They say that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach but it seems the dining tables have turned as increasing numbers of men are taking up cooking in a bid to seduce women.

Dubbed 'Gastrosexuals' this new generation of men consider cooking more a hobby than a household chore and use their kitchen prowess to impress friends and prospective partners.

Men having the ability to cook is also now a key factor in attracting women along with salary, status, personality and appearance, according to new research.

Cuban Food

I grew up in Florida with a lot of nice Cuban people around. There were several Cuban restaurants and it has become one of my very favorite foods. Just wish good ole Tennessee had more Cubans. Mexican just isn't the same.[huh]

There are a couple of awesome Cuban restaurants in Toronto, if you're ever up this way. MUCH better than the food actually in Cuba lol

Buck eyes are in Western PA too. My great aunt makes 100s of them at Christmas. In fact she makes so many, I'm kind of sick of them because they are so rich and sweet. lol I prefer kolachis and nutrolls for the holidays.

I love poutine! Can't get it in here in PA though. I do still have some poutine gravy mix in my cupboard from our last trip to Canada.

Other things I love about Western PA - pieroghies and kielbassa. My hubby is from Southern NJ and he never had a pieroghi until he moved to Western PA. And none of those Mrs. T's monstrosities either, they have to be lovingly made by your grandma or some elderly church ladies. And don't get me started on the store bought hot dogs that pass for kielbassi. Real Kielbassi should be homemade and have a flavor that knocks your socks off and causes you to burp the rest of the evening. Of course, everyone else has to eat the kielbassi as well - it can be quite gross to be the only one not reeking of kielbassi when you have to smell everyone else. lol

Personally, I wish I could find a good tamale in these parts.

All of this sounds like my wife's German/Slovenian/etc. family at Christmas. Plum butter, potato & cheese, and sauerkraut pirogies among many other similar foods are everywhere. I stick with the potato and cheese and avoid everything that smells fermented.

My wife spends days making kolachis, and poppyseed and nutrolls, but has added cranberry/pistachio biscotti (red and green, of course) to the mix.

Isn't there one at the Zoo? This isn't even a joke like "HA HA BEAVERS AT THE ZOO". I really mean a stand that sells the food at the zoo.

I haven't been to the zoo in roughly 7 years so I don't have any idea. It's so expensive! I usually just go to the free zoo in High Park

love the mexican food in LA/socal! Nothing here compares :(

I miss the Mexican food in Mexico, nothing in California compares! It is WAY different! What you get in California is the low-end, fast food stuff in Mexico.

The movie "Like Water For Chocolate" gives you more of an idea of the real thing...

Luckily, my Mexican husband took up cooking in a big way as he needed his fix.

I hate Marmite. I think it's nasty stuff (ducking head from all the marmite lovers in this thread). I first tried it in Amsterdam, and I gagged. How do you guys like that stuff?

When my brother moved to Paris, he complained loudly and bitterly about the lack of American cereal and junk food. I created a gift box which blossomed into a 20-40 pound box each month for him to enjoy. Yeah, I'm a cool sister.

This went on for two years, with me sending him a gift box of his favorite goodies each month.

Anyway, he calls me one day with loud noise in the background. Turns out he was having an "American Food Party" in Paris for all his friends, and served all the goodies I bought for him as the main staple! He called to "thank me" for hosting the party! :rage: :rage: :rage:

I never sent him a food gift box again.

In Washington I can get all the Verner's I want , but what I really want is some of the Jamaican Birch Beer and on a hot day an Italian water ice and a soft pretzel. Also am I the only one afraid to eat Italian food outside of the east coast. And forgive me but I do miss the beer, cider, pub food and biscuits from the UK.

I guess it's because I have never been to Mexico
