Looking for some answers and opinions. I was planning to order this jacket https://www.fivestarleather.us/prod...er-classic-western-denim-style-leather-jacket
First question, what size would you recommend getting? I'm a 44-45 chest and 6'2 205 with an athletic build. Should I go with the xl or 2xl?
Second question, is there much of weight or quality difference between the goat and the horse hide? I'm ok with the price difference if the quality is that much better on the horse hide. I've read through the thread and another question, should I ask for a 3 piece curved sleeve on this jacket or is the standard design good to go?
Thanks

I've got this jacket in black horse hide. The leather is unevenly thick over the jacket, the neck hole is huge and the sleeves are as straight as planks. Now, I did not indicate three piece curved sleeve nor did I give them neck size.
The horsehide is pretty good but I don't know their goat leather.
My general advice is to be as detailed as you can possibly be when you order. I am 6'5" 255, and since I was not excruciatingly detailed in my order, like @MrProper, the jacket came quite big and I had to have it tailored. Still have it and wear it. It's ok.
Good luck

I also got the same jacket in brandy hh. I supplied them with neck, shoulder, arm opening, bicep width, length, wrist opening, waist and length measurements and specified 3 peice curved arms. I'm happy with mine but it's a real crap shoot.

Are you happy with the arms of the jacket? Did you use your dress shirt neck size or what measurement did you use?

I think I measured a jackets neck that I liked. For the neck measurement I just put what I wanted the opening to be across so a diameter I didn't supply a circumference. I'm happy with the arms but I'm not nearly as experienced as some guys around here and things that don't bother me might bother someone with more experience. When you see more experienced guys fits it shows.

Ease in a jacket for t-shirt fit. Has the lounge come to any conclusions on what looks good, but is still comfortable?

I did some searching in this thread and for chest and waist, 4 inches of ease seems agreed upon there. But what about the following:

- Shoulders
- Cuffs
- Forearm / elbow
- Bicep
- Arm opening
- Neck (To form collar inner circumference)

Any input appreciated.

Leather definitely looks a lot better now that I have it in hand. I am no expert on flight jackets but this jacket certainly gives me the look I was going for. This is my first experience with goatskin and its a night and day difference to cow or horse hide. Much softer and more comfortable out the box, even though this is their veg tanned goatskin.

One thing I noticed is that Five Star has apparently stopped doing the epaulettes on this model with the double stitch line I saw featured on earlier examples from them.

Maybe Ill post a couple fit pics later on, but Im very happy with the fit. Suitably roomy and very comfortable without looking "blousy" as some people describe it. I can easily layer with a thick sweater. I’m glad I picked 42 instead of 40.

EDIT: I measured the leather thickness in serval spots and Im getting an average of 1.2 - 1.4mm. Even at this thickness its nice and soft. Goat will perhaps not show the same character as horse/cow but functionally it seems to be a great choice.

I sent 5* a denim jacket that fitted well and they cloned it in leather, took any guess work out of it for me.

Here are a couple pictures of me wearing the jacket. I’m sorry, neither me nor the person who took the picture are good photographers. I basically never take "selfies" for social media, so the quality or colours aren’t very good. I think this jacket nails the authentic "ww2 fit" I was going for. Looking at original pictures I cant tell any difference.

Sending Shawn some badalassi or similar to use for a jacket... is that a crazy idea? Would still be half the price of an Aero according to my estimate.

People have sent their own leather to Five Star before, most memorably a crazy man who was on a quest to obtain the heaviest least wearable jacket possible. Five Star made him the jacket he wanted and it was indeed unwearable.

Very bad idea in my opinion. Maybe less bad if you'll be copying an existing jacket with a good pattern. Either way I've seen enough shady/shoddy behavior by Shawn / 5* to risk sending them top quality material.

I’d only go down that route if I was getting 5* to clone a jacket that I’d physically sent them. I invested a lot in materials for a custom G-1 and the hide was the only part they were supplying. I sent measurements from a Star Sportswear G-1, my sourced zipper, mouton, lining, knits etc and what came back was well made but lots of crucial measurements weren’t what I’d specified and it therefore didn’t fit. Went on eBay at a big loss. However when I sent them a denim Trucker that fitted great they cloned it in leather and totally nailed the measurements…win!

I have only made it to page 216 and have seen your jackets up until that point and they seemed very nice for the money that was paid. Was it the quality of the leather that stopped you from buying the Five Star line? I’m trying to find the negatives and the only thing i have ran across was their CHL Steerhide version being too thick to wear in a jacket and Shawn confirmed that or the colors being off from what Shawn would post or user error in giving the wrong measurements on a custom build. Ive seen so many positives thus far with very little negatives. What am I missing? Thank you. PS The fitment of your jackets always look spot on.
I bought one of their jackets last year and I was terribly disappointed, however I should have known better. You can’t spend $250 on a jacket and expect to get an aero quality jacket. The fit was wrong, so wrong and the leather was thin in spots with zero character. I sent it back and my money was refunded immediately. Service was outstanding too..
