I'm intrigued by the captain's story that they were attacked by a sea monster. Of course, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. But that having been said, I've no doubt the world's oceans still conceal some astonishing creatures not yet cataloged. (The prosaic story of someone not properly closing the hatch is probably closer to the truth.)

On another topic, it never ceases to amaze me how brave those submariners of the first world war must have been. The technology was in its infancy, the boats were tiny/claustrophobic by our standards, and the sea was (and is) terrifyingly deep, dark, cold and --on the surface-- rough. Oh: and people were trying to sink you! You would have never gotten me into one of those things!
