I have really enjoyed reading and learning from everyone's posts, and have been lurking for a few days.

I wore an old Borsalino Alessandria that I got in a thrift shop 25 years ago, a pretty good hat that kept my head warm every winter, and it only cost me 15 bucks. It was significantly more stylish than a baseball cap. I didn't revere it like a holy relic, but grabbed it by the pinch, rolled it up and put it in my back pocket, never brushed it or cleaned it, even sat on it when the ground was wet. After years of abuse, it had a hole in the pinch big enough to fit a golf ball through, so I decided to replace it, and ordered the same (?) hat from Bencraft. It looked like my hat, but the difference in quality was disheartening. So I am going to order an HST from Art Fawcett, which I will treat with the appropriate respect. And I suppose I will treat my new Alessandria like it was an old ball cap.

Cheers, and thanks for all the info you guys share.

Welcome luxman! Thanks for sharing your hat story with us. Don't worry, you can't go wrong with a hat from Art! Once you get one, there's no turning back!

Be sure to post often. There's a lot to learn here.

Welcome

Welcome aboard Luxman. That is a sad story about the Borsalino, but it lived a valiant life. I think it's good for us all to remember that we are talking hats here, not holy relics.

From personal experience, I can tell you that you are in for an experience when you get your first hat from Art. I'm wearing mine today, sage green with a dark green ribbon. The ribbon is verbally indescribable. Get ready for a treat!

Best, Sam

Thanks for the warm welcome! I got to thinking about all the time I spent living under that hat, and my friends that knew it well. I must admit I remember it fondly. One guy last winter commented that it made me look like I just walked out of the depression, (maybe I should have kept it for the era ahead!) It protected me through 10 solid days of rain in Ireland, and although by last day there, it had the consistency of pudding. I was wearing it when I first met a half dozen girlfriends and rescued it from the trash can my ex-wife threw it in. I drove ten miles back to more than one restaraunt where I had forgotten it, and once in a bar, I threatened a man who was twice my size for burning it with a cigar. It spent one summer in the trunk of my car. It was stolen by a kid down the street, only to be returned by his father. All in all, that hat had a useful life. Buy I am a little older now, and my taste in hats has improved. I look forward to my HST.

Wow (welcome!) Luxman, that hat was like a cat: 9 lives! That's the best part of hats, when they are like that. I don't doubt for a second that you'll soon have another hat with another 9 lives in it, wear it, I'm sure DC winter weather's fine for wearing hats, and summer'll have you running for a panama!
Enjoy the board!

The Stories That Hat Could Tell...

I guess we'll never know. It certainly sounds like an old friend. A new hat won't be the same but you can wear it in memory. That's what hats do, they keep our memories from escaping. Wanna buy an oceanfront parcel in AZ?

Welcome, luxman.

ps. Never set your hat down in a bar.
