First fur felt

I just purchased a Steston Downs fur felt for a doctor friend of mine. I was wondering if there are any particular care procedures to maintain a fur felt verses a wool felt? I understand why Clevispin is such a fan they are beautiful hats. Alas, I personally still only own wools myself. I will eventually graduate to a fur felt bowler to round my collection of various lids. Any advice is welcomed.

Hey, thanks again! Use steam to shape and clean. There are many experts here with good info. For the most part, with a fur felt, I wouldn't worry about anything until it happens, then you know where to go! The only thing I would really recommend for a new fur felt is a hat brush!

I'm glad you got to encounter a fur hat, and compare it to wools.

Since you got a new hat, and did not buy vintage you should really have no cleaning or restoration style work needed. Pretty much just the brush fedorastore mentioned. Just learn from my mistake: A brim brush is stiffer bristled, and a crown brush is more like a paintbrush. Try not to use the brim brush on the crown of a soft dress hat, it doesn't work as well, kind of drags the material.

I actually use a small, 1 inch paint brush with fairly soft bristles. I don't even bother with the brim brush unless something is being stubborn.

Good advice

I appreciate the info. I have not recieved the Stetson yet, but I will soon. My wife said she will help me post a few photo's ( since computers and I have disagreements :eusa_doh: ).

I am curious about the differences, just increasing my knowledge of hat brands and styles. I know a lot more know then a few months ago, thanks to all of you.
