I suggest wear whatever the hell you want except perhaps a Pork Pie.....as no one except Van Morrison looks good in Pork Pie and even he doesn't wear them anymore. My perspective is that unless you have a head shape that is an extreme outlier you can wear whatever you like, whatever you feel comfortable wearing and with whatever outfit. It is all a matter of style and confidence. I have a collection of somewhere north of 60 hats.......all colours, multiple styles and wear the hat I feel like wearing that day with whatever I feel like wearing. I have no firm rules of which hat with which outfits.......I just wear the hat. So if it 'breaks' any fashion norms I can live with that.
belfastboy nailed it, wear whatever the hell you want. I will keep a diplomatic silence on the pork pie.
The two photos that you have posted are great images, so where's your problem? Your hat size might limit you but there's always another supplier somewhere that can accommodate you.

Hey all! My first post here, so hopefully I’m posting on the right section of the forum.

I’m not new to hats, I've been wearing them for my whole life, but I’d like to get some other opinions as to what styles will best suit my face shape.

To begin, my style tends to be eclectic, but generally I wear formal wool suits, tweed sport coats, blazers etc., so perhaps more formal styles of hat will work better.

I’m 6’4 and have an athletic build. My hat size is 7 3/4 or 62 cm. Currently I have quite a number of hats, but the two I wear the most are two Akubra numbers — a brown Fed IV and a carbon grey Stylemaster. But I’m open to suggestion.

I also do wear quite a lot of linen suits in summer and am looking to get a decent Panama hat. But again, I’m open to suggestion as to what shapes would best work for my face shape. I think I have a long face, but I could be wrong. I’ve also got a ton of hair, so I usually find wearing a baseball cap doesn’t work for me — only two so far in my life have worked.

Thanks guys! Looking forward to being a part of your community. Attached are two pictures of me, so hopefully they’ll give you an idea.

At your height and hat size I’d suggest staying with hats with a minimum 2 5/8” brim and more is probably better. I’m a big believer in proportions.

I ALWAYS get in trouble when I post a thought right away instead of waiting for a day or two for the thoughts to catch up to my fingers!!!! Mea Culpa, mea culpa.

I think it is Steve in Denmark that looks good too!

You’re in good, and plentiful, company.

Pork pies and derbies/bowlers are the two styles I just can’t get comfortable under. I also think that that objectively they don’t look good on me. I think if I lost some weight (working on it) and my face leans up I might like how I look under a derby…time will tell.

Surprisingly my father pulls off porkpies quite well — in my case, I think I look a little odd when I wear them. Can’t win ‘em all ‍♂️

Wow, the kid from Whittier, California, USA, gets a shout out! Thank you!

Since I'm here, @Count of Mavrovo , I think both hats suit you very well. But I do think the vest in the first photo is too snug and that you should go up at least one size.
Hahaha thanks friend — in that case, I was out hiking and just threw on whatever was close by so that I didn’t get eaten alive by the mosquitoes

Welcome to The Lounge.
No real problem, but rather, I always like to keep moving forward and improving myself as much as I can — I can’t think of every way to improve, so I like to get people’s input where possible. Often, others can offer really fine advice and suggest things I never would have considered before.

So I figured this would be the place to get suggestions on improving my understanding of hats and what works for me.

That’s a great suggestion — I’ve got one small brimmed straw hat, but now that I think of it, I don’t wear it much anymore. I think you’re onto something with the proportions.

I personally have received static and interference on this frequency when I wear my Open Road hats.

Specifically, too stingy of a brim for a big guy.

I think that the OP has a good grip on this proportion from looking at his posted photos.

I’m not altogether convinced that wearing the right hat will truly keep you “moving forward and improving yourself” so why not put that all aside and just enjoy the journey.

Wear what you like …… it’s your head, your hat, and your money.

True, but variety is the spice of life - so I value input just the same

And true enough — my head is pretty large so I gotta make do with what I can find

Thanks friend! That means a lot, because I find getting the right proportions difficult.

If you haven’t yet, you need to look into custom hats as you’re a size 7 3/4.. Entry level custom prices aren’t as much as many think and a true masterpiece can be had for less than the cost of two modern entry level Stetsons.

Indeed! Do you have any suggestions for reputable hatmakers? I’m in Canada, but I travel to the States regularly.
