Thanks Feraud for your advice. I did in fact get rid of the last two paragraphs and replaced them with this conclusion.

"Well made, stylish dress hats are becoming more fashionable, and I'd hate to see your illogical hat policy hinder your business any further. As far as i'm concerned, it's an insult that my wearing a fedora and three piece suit entitled me to be treated as a gang member. I realize you own a private business, and you're entitled to make whatever rules you want, but if this rule isn't modified, I will not be returning. I plan to suggest the same to my friends and business associates as well. Thank you very much for you time taken to read my letter, and I hope we can come to an agreement. Please feel free to contact me anytime if you have any questions or concerns with anything I've put forth in this correspondence."

I think I'll leave the Capone reference, I think it's appropriate. Anyone else say I should ditch the Capone thing? But after reading my letter again (which I wrote at like midnight, so, forgive me) I see I had some bad moves in there. Permission letter... pfft.. what was I thinking. It's me who should give him a permission letter.. TO BREATHE! Just kidding. :)

Well, if I lived nearby, I'd be more than happy to give it a test. I just wonder if the bouncer saw the hat, then the "yoot" under it, stopped there and concluded: "latino gang banger" or something similar (your avatar does seem to indicate a slightly hispanic appearance to me). How he came to that conclusion if you were also wearing a three piece suit...well, let's just say that high levels of intelligence may not be a job requirement for his position. BTW, the fed wasn't a stingy brim, was it? lol Even so, I wonder if they would have allowed Kevin Federline or Johnny Depp to wear their hats if they showed up at the door?

Thanks Baggers for the letter advice, I did remove the attorney thing, and I took some of your other suggestions as well, as you can see above. I'm not Latino, however, I don't even look it. Maybe it's the black and white pic? I've actually never heard anyone say that about me before, I kind of had a chuckle. And actually, it was a stingy brim! How'd you know??

Again, thanks for all the help with this letter. I hope it's perfect now, but i'll wait for some more feedback before I send it out just yet.

You know, I got decent results with a similar letter I wrote. Long story short, I received horrible service walking into the door of a place and promptly left with my party in tow. We went somewhere else, just a block away. I wrote a letter to the offending establishment. One thing I added was a photocopy of the receipts from our outing that night (with personal info blacked out of course), which were substantial. I merely said we would have spent that with you but we didn't. I got a phonecall from the manager within a few days of sending it but I haven't gone back to the place despite an offer of discounted service. Hey, I'm going to go where they know how to treat people.

What an outrage!! I've got a story... a story of oppression and evil.

Saturday night I went out for a night on the town with a couple friends. I was rocking a gray three piece suit with a matching fedora. There's a bar here called "Capone's Lounge", complete with cigar humidor, martini experts, and overstuffed leather chair. Perfect, right? It's one of four bars that are part of a big building, but thats beside the point.

I approach the security goon, ID and cover charge in hand. I get a cute little duckie stamped on my hand and make my way in, when i'm manhandled. The said goon grabs my arm and says "Sorry, we don't allow hats." I look at him with a WTF look, and he produces a list of rules, one of which states "BASEBALL CAPS ONLY". Wow, what a travesty.

He proceeds to explain to me how "do rags" and ski caps were being worn, and they perceived them to be gang related. I had enough and asked to speak to the manager, they brought me the owner. I told him that my hat hadn't been "gang related" since his mom was in diapers. In the end, I got the old "well if I let you do it, I have to let everyone do it", and it ended. So I had to leave my hat in the car. :(

But after awhile we went to another bar, where I was complimented several times by staff and patrons alike on my headgear. Weird, huh? Should I write a nasty letter or something?
Baseball caps only! Isn't that more gang related than a fedora hat?? The name of the club sounds misleading IMO.

Update

I guess the unearthing of this thread deserves an update.

First, Hannibal doesn't really have "gangs", but a whole section of town full of crime, etc. But the bar is in Quincy, which is no better. But there isn't a huge infestation of big city crime overrunning the street, not enough to warrant fedora discrimination.

I never got a reply from the owner of the bar. I returned since the incident a couple times, wearing my fedora, without a problem. Officially there is no change to the rules, but my fedora is overlooked. I even saw a well dressed African-American gentleman in a fedora on one occasion (I gave him a Fedora Lounge matchbook). I haven't been in several months now, most of my friends and I have found different places to go anyway.

Oh well, at least I tried to change the world.
