Yes, it's very important to wear the scent and smell it initially, and also on the "dry down". Different notes dominate at different times, and it's not unusual for perfum to smell very different (for good and for ill) once it's mixed with your skin's chemistry.
I'm currently loving Creed's Love in White, but it's rather hard to find (at the discounted sites, no way am I going to pay full price, lol!). And for the record, Creed's "Himalaya" is a *fantastic*, pant-worthy scent for most guys. It's a bit pricey, but search on the discounted sites for at least half off.
