There were hundreds of great movies made in the 1930's, but there have also been later wonderful movies that capture the mood of the era...

This is my list so far. What others movies are good examples?

Sweet and Lowdown
Radio Days
The Purple Rose of Cairo
Paper Moon
Chinatown
Once Upon a Time in America
Mrs Parker and the Vicious Circle
The Untouchables
Oh Brother Where Art Thou?
Citizen Kane

I actually can't believe that I forgot to put Raiders and Temple of Doom on the list in the 1st place!

I suppose I should also add The Rocketeer...

Miller's Crossing

I love this one! I have seen it a million times, but I find myself revisiting it for different reasons. One minute I am engaged in the wonderful plot and storyline...the next minute I am drooling over the clothes...the next I am freeze framing the hats...then I am looking the decor of the homes, clubs...then there are the cars....:eusa_doh: there is just too much to name. All in all, great movie from so many different angles.

^ Miller's Crossing is beyond awesome. That movie is fabulous! I agree, watching that movie is almost sensory overload because everything in it is just *too* spectacular.

I love The Rocketeer, The Aviator, Changeling (not a cheerful film, but beautiful cinematography), Radio Days (although really that's 1940s), naturally Raiders of the Lost Ark, Last Man Standing, A River Runs Through It, and there are 2 children's movies I actually really enjoy for the period costumes & scenery, both American Girl movies - Molly: An American Girl Movie (1940s) and Kit Kittredge: An American Girl Movie (1930s).

i think "Last Man Standing" is a very worthy remake of "Yojimbo".

and i've always been in the minority, but i think "Once Upon A Time In America" was superior to "The Godfather" (but not "Godfather II).

if "Legends of the Fall" counts (1930's towards the end), it's one of my all time favorites.....

The Great Gatsby

I believe Gatsby's setting is the 1920s.

The superior 1949 version used to be available on youtube, but it's been taken down. Too bad, it's better than the 1974 Redford one.

It's not nearly as good as the BBC televsion version, but Steve Martin's Pennies from Heaven is worth a viewing, if only for the wonderful soundtrack.

Yes, the BBC version is FAR superior. And the 3disc soundtrack of British jazz orchestras has been a favourite of mine nearly all my life. Essential listening.
